Re: Changing DC harddisk

Hi:

First thing is do you have SBS, and if so, what type of SBS license do you
have? An OEM license cannot be transferred to a new computer. It is
married to the computer on which it came installed.

Second, when you say "hard disk", I hope you mean "Raid". Drives are so
inexpensive there is no reason not to have RAID1 or RAID5 in your server.

Assuming that you can meet the licensing requirements, you can move your
installation to a new computer in one of several ways. Imaging products
that offer hardware independent restores (HIR) are one. In addition to
Acronis, there is Shadow Protect from Storage Craft, and I think others.

By way of introduction, have a look at this document from Microsoft that
explains the supported method.

You will see that it suggests strongly that you restore to the same
hardware.

Most of the onboard components will be discovered by Windows after the new
system boots, and you can feed the drivers then. The issue with the hard
drive is not the drive itself, but rather the controller. Windows boot
routine is wedded to the storage controller, and it does not play well when
transferred to a computer with a "foreign" storage subsystem.

You can circumnavigate this issue with the use of a discrete disk
controller. Install the controller into the existing system. When Windows
detects the new controller, you can feed it the drivers, and it will boot
from that controller when it is next offered the chance. Now the rub... how
do you get your installation from the old system EIDE drive/controller to
the new SATA drive/controller?.

Back to imaging software... with or without HIR. Since the driver is
already there, you can image the system from the old to the new, where the
driver will already be installed in Windows, so it will see the new
controller and boot.

This is more problematic with an onboard controller, as you need somehow to
introduce the driver. Since the card can't be introduced into the existing
system, you can't get there from here.

But here is another KB that offers a way out of this problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824125

And, if you would like a clean installation, while preserving your AD,
server name, domain name, and workstation SIDS, you can look to
www.sbsmigration.com.

I want to upgrade the hardware I'm using for a domain controller in a small
network.

The new computer I'll be using has a sata hard drive. While the existing
DC
has a IDE hard drive.

I don't want to have to reinstall active directory, or restore system
state
as I have tried restoring system sate on a different computer before and
of
cause there are problems with device drivers and such.

What I wanted to do was to put the sata drive and the IDE drive in a third
computer and copy the complete disk from the IDE drive to the sata drive
then put the sata drive in the new computer and boot it up.

I'm not really a hardware man would this work?

Any one see any problems with doing this

I have also been pointed to acronis software to do the job, any comments?
