I pulled the backup drive (USB hard drive using ntbackup) and the
daily_backup.bkf file appears to be bad. Using ntbackup on my XP
laptop, I cannot open the file. I downloaded a trial piece of
software called "Repair My Backup". An initial (hour long) glance at
the file appears that it the software is going to be able to allow me
Forgot to mention ... The reason your backup may be OK even though
Windows XP NTBackup is having trouble with it is that the Windows Server
2003 Service Pack level that you restore from must match the SP in place
when the backup was taken.
For example, if your backup was taken with SBS2003 SP1 you cannot
restore it with SBS2003 RTM. (I believe the Microsoft docs cover this,
but I haven't looked at them in a while.)
So, XP NTBackup may be incompatible with your backup file while SBS2003
_at_the_right_SP_ may work.
