Re: AVG 7.5?

Hi Owen:

Are you saying that the long list of exclusions that Trend, MS, and others
recommend are simply not necessary? For example, I have seen two SBS
servers go to "journal wrap" and in both cases the apparent cause was the AV
engine scanning the sysvol folders.

Or, as Wayne has listed them?

If AVG somehow performs the scan without causing any problems with any of
the system files or exchange data, this would be reason enough to switch.
Or, alternatively, do we know if it is "smart" enough to exclude the
critical files and folders from its scans, both real time and manual?

I'm migrating a Windows 2000 server w/ Exchange to SBS 2003. This Windows
2000 server has AVG 7.5 antivirus software installed, and as far as I can
tell, it's not excluding anything from its scans. This might explain why
the
Exchange store is fried ... But anyway, I've been looking through the
program options and find few.

Does anyone have any experience with AVG on a server? Should I even
attempt
to move this license to SBS?

I'm using AVG 7.5 on my own and some clients' networks and it works
fine. In fact, Grisoft now has an SBS bundle: AVG Anti-Malware SBS
Edition. But that's just to make licensing simple. The underlying A/V
engine is the same regardless of which version you use.

While the exclusions Merv mentions are a good idea, I've never done
anything special about exclusions with AVG and have never had any
problems with Exchange or anything else for that matter. (This is over a
period of more than 2 years.) Once it is configured, "It just works."

I believe SBS MVP Steve Foster also uses AVG and I haven't heard any
complaints from him either.
