I do admit it, yes they can use MX records for abuse.
However I have to admit
I NEVER just set up a SBS server with Just RBL's for spam.
To me it's more important to have a client GET mail
Than have it bounced.
I personally think it looks unprofessional to have a bounced mail because
it's down
We use only RBL's, and IMF if it doesn't cause trouble, with customers
that don't want to pay much more. Customers that care and want to afford
more usually get Trend Micro Server/Client and a FortiGate, which also
allows them to block sites by category and such. It's a pretty nice
firewall with good value. It also filters for virusses in http, smtp,
pop3, imap, im and some others and fungates as IPS.
I know that's just a professionalism Quirk I have trying to reach the 100%
delivered mail.
Can't be bothered anymore. Servers usually don't get on the list for
nothing, and customers getting a mail stating their mail is blocked by
RBL usually just call or fax or send it to some hotmail address.
But,
You are saying when you configure a SBS server for a Client.
You have NO Third Party Software for SPAM or Antivirus
and You disable IMF
and you rely totally on RBL's?
No thus :)
Exchange retry is Default is 2 days not 4 (I doubt if people change this.)
And it's not the server down that is always the issue
there is the issue of Power outages for days. and ISP's failing on service.
I've had an ISP fail service for 14 days they kept saying next day, next
day.
The Client was thrilled that they had back up MX records.
Where I'm located power outages are really rare and in my life here
they've never lasted longer than a day. In case of long lasting ISP
errors, which we haven't had yet, we usually changed the MX records,
send the stuff to us and store it there.
Saved them thousands of dollars in revenue loss.
Did they see the mail then? Most customers I know don't like waiting for
14 days for an answer :)
Why are you are spending time administration of MX records
What do you do that takes so much time?
Not the MX records, changing them takes like a minute. The mailservers
itself. I've had customers with 15 email addresses, one domain and they
got hit with around 45.000 mails per day directly and around
140.000-180.000 through their backup MX's. Imagine being the backup MX,
but then for like another 100-200 domains more and it's spammers day.
You could use spam filters, but with those amounts of email they'll soak
resources like crazy hogging throughput, plus a lot of customers might
not like your spamfilters as they're not in their control.
Hosting their own backup MX servers costs quite some money. Most of our
SBS customers don't have much money. If internet might be an issue we
get them to get 2 lines, 1 SDSL with a silver contract or something and
a cheap 50 euro/month secondary line (from another ISP/infrastructure
provider (a lot of ISP's use same infrastructure)) which we then make
backup MX (but actually thus is the same server as the primary).
With us it's just a little risk, but you're appearantly in a much higher
risk area, services like electricity and internet are usually _very_
stable here.
