Merv,
RE: authentication: We tried using the master account and MX; it didn't work
to route to the individual boxes; Then we tried using the specific log-ons
for individual accounts with the 3rd party host, using the smtp-connector.
Bringing in mail is routed to pop.registeredsite.com; outbound to
auth-smtp.registeredsite.com, with the full email addressed passed to the
host, with password for authentication; it fails and we get the message back
that was in my original question.
We do have our own domain. The email accounts are xyz@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx, etc.
By the way; the accounts were set up using the wizard, not manually.
Any other ideas or directions to look at?

For authentication, are you using the main (email) account and password you.
set up with the 3rd party hoster?
And you have a registered domain name (ourcompany.com) with MX and A records
set up?

Thanks for chiming in Merv:
We have checked out all the docs:
The settings for smarthost are all in place; but the server will not
authenticate the outbound mail.
Any specific ideas?
