Monitoring multiple customers backups

As per the subject...I'm just fishing for some suggestions to the following....
I have a number of clients running various Windows versions (SBS2000/2003, Standard 2000/2003), they run a variety of backup solutions (Sym BUExec, NTBackup using a custom script that provides labelling, eject, status emails etc), SBS 2003 native wizard & a couple of other 3rd party apps). Their systems are configured to email me with status or completion alerts - these hit a mailbox and rules sort the mail into successful/exceptions, failed or no tape categories.... Rudimentary but it works....for those servers that send mail.
For whatever reason a server may occasionally sprovide no email at all (misconfig or new install of something like McAfee AV, BUExec services stopped etc etc etc). I'm wondering what other peole do in this scenario.
I know that Sys Centre Essentials with Remote Management is a possible solution but it costs :)
Anyone know of a solution that would be able to alert me to the non-receipt of an expected notification. Ideal world would be for a script/app that parses the contents of the logs mailbox, checks the email subject/body and assigns a red light for failed/missing mail, green light for success/exceptions and a yellow light for no tapes. If this could populate a DB or display the results in HTML it would be perfect.....
So, come on guys & gals.... anyone got any ideas?
TIA,
A frustrated log checker
