You don't reall need a WINS server at each site. But if only one, then all
servers and workstations should be using it to register their records,
especially the remote ones.

That way when \\remoteserver\share is asked for the WINS server can locate
the IP address of the remote share. Try that first.

All servers were pointing at the SBS2003 WINS server.

I've setup the DHCP on the firewall router at Site C, the remote site,
to assign SBS 2003 DNS Site A as primary DNS, DNS at Site B as the
secondary DNS and the router itself for third DNS.
Also setup same DHCP to assign SBS2003 Site A for WINS.

ipconfig /all on client laptop at Site C is thus:

IP Address 192.168.50.16
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.50.1
DHCP Server 192.168.50.1
DNS Servers 10.0.0.2
192.168.20.2
192.168.50.1
Primary WINS Server 10.0.0.2

Laptop complains that it cannot find a domain controller when it
starts up.
Logon server is set to SBS 2003 server at Site A

Outlook 2003 will logon to Exchange Server

Try and open a share from SBS2003 at Site A (10.0.0.2) - no problems,
can traverse folders and subfolders many layers deep without any
problems at all.

Try and open a share from DC at Site B - opens OK if its say the
NETLOGON share or another share with hardly anything in it.
Try and open a share which contains a lot of files and folders - after
a long timeout - error - the specified network name is no longer
available..curses !

Create a new share at Site B, this opens OK from Site C.
Create a folder within it, try an open that folder, error - the
specified network name is no longer available !

Do you know it's a similar kind of thing to what I experienced with
some Vista PC's a few months back over a hardware VPN. This MS KB
fixed that problem: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/899148

Might try that and see what happens

Jim.
