Re: Issues with store.exe and RPCServ.exe

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi Travis:

Two things stand out in your post.

1. "not enough storage on the C drive"
I would be looking to see what is using 70 GB +/- of space, and what I
could move off or delete. Windows really does not like under 10% free
space, and is much happier with 25% plus. One of our more prolific
contributors likes Tree Size, free or pro, for this.

2. That you did not post any errors from your event viewer, or tell us that
there aren't any. Please look through your event logs and let us know the
red error messages, or that there are none. We would need the event id and
the source, and preferable enough of the message to make some educated guess
as to is meaning.

In addition, RPCServ.exe is not on my radar on any of the servers that I
look after. 34% CPU use is extraordinary. I see a few references to this
process, most involve either incomplete replication or a McAfee process.
Can you confirm is McAfee is now, or ever has been a part of this servers
existence, and or if there is another DC on the LAN?

Lacking any evidence to the contrary, and because you said it had been
inactive for some time, I think auto accept agent is a separate issue, but
still, see if you have any items in the event logs about this or anything
else.

I am running SBS 2003 Standard SP1 on a Dell PowerEdge 700. Single
processor,
with 2 GB of RAM. I have a 70 GB Raid 1 drive and 320 GB Raid 1 drive. I
keep
the server up to date using WSUS 3.0.

Recently, I have begun getting low processor idle time alerts. When I look
at the running processes using task manager (as well as the daily
summary),
both RPCServ.exe and store.exe are the top two processes. Over the last
several days, RPCServ has averaged about 34% of processor time and
store.exe
has averaged around 28%.

Also, according to last night's server summary, there were two processes
for
both RPCServ and store, running under different ID's. Again, using task
manager today, I have seen two processes for both applications running,
but
not all the time (sometimes there is one, sometimes two).

At the same time, my backups have begun failing (I back up to an external
disk) for various reasons - either a delayed write fail, and last night's
backup failed because the vss could not create a shadow copy because of
not
having enough storage on the C: drive.

The only software issue I have had recently is that auto accept agent has
stopped processing items, and I can't figure out why. I don't know if this
is
related to the issue above, as it has existed for a few weeks and the
perfromance issues just started a few days ago.

Any and all suggestion are appreciated.
