RE: Raid problem?

We'll need a bit more information about your server before we're able to
give any useful advice.

What kind of server is it? i.e. IBM, Dell, Compaq

What model? If it's a Dell, please provide the Service Tag Number.

Do you know the model number of the SATA controller being used? Is it an
onboard controller or a card in a slot? Did you get any documentation with
the controller?

Based on what I see so far RAID is NOT configured on this server, your first
clue is the fact that each drive has its own drive letter (C: and E:). I also
assume your CDROM drive is letter D:?

Your second clue is the fact that the "Intel Matrix Storage console" clearly
states that neither drive is part of a RAID configuration "Usage: Non-RAID
hard drive".

RAID configurations are usually done before loading the OS, the ONLY time I
can think of doing it after is if you forgot to do it and now need to
"Migrate" to a RAID configuration**. Note: not all RAID controllers support
RAID migrations, this is why you'll need to consult the RAID controller
documentation. However, most support creating a Mirror after the fact without
reloading.

**There are other reasons for migrations, i.e. moving from a mirror to a
RAID 5 configuration or adding more drives, but that's another topic.

When it comes to "Avoiding" this in the future...well ultimately it's the
admin/installer/technician/trained professional's responsibility to verify
the RAID is properly configured BEFORE setting up the OS.

I can only guess there was some disconnect when your order was placed. We
stick to DELL servers which come pre-loaded and configured for RAID but the
first thing we do is wipe it and reload it, of course verifying the RAID is
setup the way we prefer.

Hello,

I could really use some advice. I have a server that I support that I
did not configure. When ordered, it was specifically requested that
the two hard drives be configured with raid (all data stored
identically on two drives) mirroring.

Now I am examining this server before doing SP2 and other needed
patches and I am a little concerned because it does not appear that
there is a raid at all!

Question 1 - If there is not RAID, is it possible to create it now
without having to rebuild/restore my otherwise functioning server? If
so, I could really use some advice on safely proceeding. The second
hard drive is not being used.

Question 2 - How can I avoid such a problem in the future? Is RAID
configured before or after the SBS server software is installed?

Here's what I can see. Please let me know if you can help:

1. I see two drive letters, c & e in my computer. Drive c has all the
server data and user shares. Drive letter e contains nothing special
and certainly is not a mirror of C. They are both the same size.

2. In logical disk manager, I see two drives, 0 and 1, both active and
labeled c and e

3. I looked at a program on the server called Intel Matrix Storage
console. It says all hard drives OK. Here is the report:
Hard Drive 0
Usage: Non-RAID hard drive
Status: Normal
Device Port: 0
Device Port Location: Internal
Current Serial ATA Transfer Mode: Generation 1
Model: ST3160811AS
Serial Number: 5PT172FF
Firmware: 3.AAE
Native Command Queuing Support: Yes
System Hard Drive: Yes
Size: 149 GB

Hard Drive 1
Usage: Non-RAID hard drive
Status: Normal
Device Port: 1

Current Serial ATA Transfer Mode: Generation 1
Model: ST3160811AS
