Re: Changing Shadow Copy Volume

Changed the shadow copies for the c: drive to use storage on d: which solved
the problem. VSS uses shadow copy for backup on in use files. After the
backup is done it frees up the space.
According to the document listed in this post temp files for users (admin)
under document settings can be removed from the server? It's over 270meg
which will help.

Thanks for your help everyone.

Thanks Al. I'll keep looking. I looked at the document and it's all pretty
much things I've done. When you first configure SBS backup through the wizard
it lets you decide to use Shadow Copy or not. I'll try turning off shadow
copy to see if it runs without the C: drive leak. I really think it is
something to do with that. I couldn't even backup up the system state at 1.1
gig on the server before I got rid of about 500 meg. I'm kind of chicken to
extend the partition as well, but it's going to have to be done. Lucky this
client has exact same box that can be used.

Probably just temporary files created while the backup goes on - you could
search for recent files while the backup goes to be sure (what are you
backing up to?).

Either way only 1.7 GB free is too low and moving the shadows will free up
some space. Have a look at that other link I gave for more ideas to free up
more space on C: as extending a boot partition is not trivial.

Now I'm a little more confused. As I stated earlier when I backup SBS
2003.
My C:drive partion slowly decreases from 1.7gig to about 300meg (at which
case it fails). When it is done the partition is back up to 1.7 again. If
I
break down the backup to smaller chunks that backup works fine. I am
assuming
it's using the space for VSS maybe doing shadow copies function for the
open
files, but not saving them. Would that make sense? If that true by
specifing
another drive if would use that for VSS to do the backups? Sorry for all
the questions, but I'd really like to understand this before I make
changes.
Is there other things that would reduce the boot drive space during a
backup?

Backups use VSS to back up open files. The Shadow Copy feature you're
seeing in the properties of the drive is what enables "previous
versions,"
where you can restore older versions of files, or recover deleted files,
from as many shadow copies as are stored on the server. On the SBS, see
the
Help topic "Shadow copies of shared folders: overview" for more info
about
that.

The open file backup and previous versions are two different functions of
the same technology.

Thanks for the reply everyone. Good article too bad I spent so much
time
reinventing the wheel first. I'll disable shadow copies on the C: move
them
to the D: just in case. Hopefully free up some space.

Wouldn't you need to do shadow copies to back up in use file to do bare
metal restores on another server? If you didn't use shadow copies
wouldn't
it
just skip the in use files or am I confused on what shadow copies do.

For disaster recoery testing I use the SBS backup and use a directory
restore and restore c: and D: and system state to another server.

See Larry's post in reponse to the another post "short on space - C
drive"
from the 15th below. He gives an excellent list of things that can be
moved
off C:, which is a very common issue due to the way OEM's like DELL
install
SBS.

As for shadow copies, I generally do not shadow OS and database
drives,
just
drives where users store their files (which are on separate partitions
of
course). You can save shadow copies wherever you like, I generally
use a
non-RAID drive that is just used for non-critical data.

Im running SBS server 2003 with a 12 gig boot partition. I have
exchange,
folder redirection, swap file located on another drive. The C: drive
has
about. 1.67 gig of space avaliable. Not what I would like. I've
moved
all
the
logs the unistallservice pack information ect. I need more room
because
when
I do backups I think the Shadow copies use up the remaining 1.67 gig
and
fail. If I break down the back up and do the c: drive in three
different
backups it works. Can I remove the shadow copy check box on the C:
drive
and
use D: as my shadow copy drive? Also what other things can I do to
reduce
space on the drive. I realize at some time I may have to extend the
partition.
