Re: Replication and DFS on SBS2003 R2 network

Hi Matt:

Sometimes a post like this will resolve into "RWW? Why didn't I think of that?"

Sometime we forget to tell users who post to consider RWW because it seems so obvious and intuitive to SBSers who have been using the product for some time.

You mention a Terminal Server, so I really don't understand why you would want to open files "over the WAN".

So, for the record... have you considered SBS RWW from the remote site to the TS and opening and using the files there?

I can't give you a lot more light on whether DFS-R will be a part of the next version of SBS
And in that none of my clients have had the need, I haven't played with DFS in general
hopefully we'll get some other contributors who can answer your questions

There is business DSL at both sites, but they are half a country away.
Upstream bandwidth and latency are limiting factors. Opening the files
directly will work for most of the files (subject to inter-site issues that I
still have, but hopefully I'm working out on another posting).

However, we've got a share with several large(ish) files that often get
slightly modified by users in both places, and latency in opening/accessing
these files is a big pain. So DFS-R with its RDC would be a perfect
solution... if it worked on SBS.

Technically speaking the vpn is not really hardware (OpenWRT), but I think
what you're really getting at is whether its a direct server to server VPN;
it is not. We are routing private ip space between the sites, and the VPN
can encrypt faster than the network congestion.

Right now I'm leaning towards having a small share on the R2 Terminal Server
that participates in a replication group with the remote site file server.
Ugly, but manageable in the near-term. Any more elegant suggestions are
appreciated. Any hope that we will see a DFS-R module for SBS anytime soon?

While I'm at it, is there a way to mount/link DFS shares?

For instance, say I've got a DFS-R share setup as \\DOMAIN\Common that is
replicated between R2Server_siteA and R2Server_siteB. I also have a share
\\DOMAIN\Everything setup which is served directly from SBSServer_siteA. Is
there a way to link/mount \\DOMAIN\Common as a subdirectory of
\\DOMAIN\Everything (ie: \\DOMAIN\Everything\Common )?? I'm thinking that
this may be possible(??), but that I wouldn't get the behavior I'm looking
for (ie: when I connect to \\DOMAIN\Everything which is hosted on
SBSServer_SiteA (and not replicated), and traverse to its "Common"
subdirectory, I'll get the right stuff, but it will be connecting through
SBSServer_SiteA, and not to my "closest" replication of the Common share),
thereby defeating the purpose of replication.

Is there an easy way to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance!

-Matt
