Re: Remote Desktop to Server failing

I may be confusing the issue, as this is for 2 different domains. One domain
is local to my location and I can use RDP on it when connected locally. The
other is remote to me, and I am unable to use RDP on it.
I was at the other location yesterday and had exactly the same problem, I
could use RDP locally, but could not connect using RDP to the remote location.
I will see if I can use a VPN connection and the commands you indicated in
your reply.

In your second post you said that you can connect via RDP from the local.
network. Did I misunderstand this?
If not, I would try to VPN into the LAN (you said that this still works),
connect to the SBS box and reboot. You might want to connect to the console
(mstsc /v:IPaddress /console). Stop the Exchange Services and SQL services
first before doing the restart and see if that fixes the problem.

I don't know if I should be happy that it may not be the update or
disappointed it may just be the reboot.
I will not have access the domain until Monday - are you thinking that
just
rebooting again may fix the problem? Or, is there somewhere else I need
to
look?
VPN connections appear to be working, just no Remote Desktop to the
server.

Unfortunately, this is an unpredictable condition - but it happens. We've
been struggling with this for at least 6 months, possibly as long as a
year.
It's happened to me twice today, while installing the latest updates. Any
update that requires a restart can result in this condition, it's not
dependent on any one particular update. Sometimes, from a workstation -
running shutdown /i and selecting the SBS server will work. But if
you're
remote then you're probably stuck and need to get physical access.
Charlie Russel uses a script to shutdown some services (exchange,
particualiry) and then restarting the server, and reports good results.

I don't have any client with a single NIC setup. I can't see that the
patches you applied would have created the issue. I also haven't seen
anything for other people. If you can RDP internally to the SBS box and
your Firewall is forwarding 3389 to your SBS NIC you should be able to
connect.

Both are SBS 2003 R2, standard, single NIC.
"Claus" wrote:
That's what I did. I patched them remotely and then reconnected from
outside.
Are both of the boxes you updated 2NIC setups?

I should have indicated that I see this when attempting to connect
from
physically outside the domain. It works fine when connecting from
within
the
LAN.

I just did the updates on 2 boxes and didn't run into any issues.

I just applied three updates to an SBS 2003 R2 server and now I
can
no
longer
connect via Remote Desktop Connection. This has happened in 2
domains.
Anyone else seeing this or know of a fix?
The updates were KB941672, KB943460, and KB890830
