Hi Claus, I can't ping 4.2.2.1 from SBS server. The SBS server is behind
Surewest ISP in Sacramento, CA greater area. To clarify, I work at a
location with an XO T1 line. The idea was to test ping the Surewest DNS from
behind another ISP so I know they do in fact work. Sorry if I confused you.
I'm really at a loss for the of these problems! Let me know if you have any
other thought. Please know that I am researching this issue as well. I look
forward to hearing any other thoughts and suggestions anyone might have at
this point.

Mike,
Try to ping 4.2.2.1 from the SBS. If you get a response, enter that one
under the DNS forwarders and test. If your ISP is XO - where abouts in the
US are you?

Hi Joe,
thanks for responding. Here are the answers to your questions:
Can't ping www.yahoo.com
Can't ping yahoo's IP (66.94.234.13)
Yes, my ISP's DNS servers are listed as forwarders in SBS.
I removed ISP's DNS so SBS could try and hunt for Root servers like you
mentioned with no luck....
ISP DNS still removed from forwarders: tried to ping them, no luck.
Put ISP's DNS back in forwarders, still can't ping them..
As a test, I could ping the ISP's DNS servers from an XO communications
T1 line at a separate geographical location.
I'm really confused. As you also mentioned: "It's not unknown for an ISP
to have customers
and servers on two or more IP blocks, only accessible from other
addresses in the same block." But if I put my ISP's primary DNS as a
secondary DNS pointer in TCP/IP setting, all is good; but we all know
only the sbs server IP is supposed to be the ONLY one listed in the
servers TCP/IP settings...
So what am I missing here? Thanks for yours and everyone elses help!
From which we assume you still have problems. OK, those numbers look
reasonable, though I'm never happy using the 10. network with anything
other than a class A netmask i.e. 255.0.0.0, as I've been bitten more
than once by software which assumes this. Shouldn't be a problem with
SBS, though.
So how far can you get?
Ping Internet sites by IP address from SBS?
Ping Internet sites by name from SBS?
If not, are the ISP's DNS servers listed as forwarders to SBS? This is
set in the CEICW, you either enter public DNS servers or leave the entry
blank, in which case the SBS will use the Internet Root servers. If they
are used, try again leaving them blank to see if this changes anything.
If you do have these servers listed as forwarders, can you ping them by
IP address from the SBS? It's not unknown for an ISP to have customers
and servers on two or more IP blocks, only accessible from other
addresses in the same block.
