My issue is resolved now. In order to get this to work, I had to make sure
that the console is logged out at night. I scheduled a script with "shutdown
-l" to run 15 minutes prior to the backup. It has run two nights in a row
without issues now.

manage by exception, leaving the server alone until it tells you there is a
problem.

Well, not completely. The daily report will still give you an alert if NT
Backup fails.

If it simply didn't work at all I could just give up, but the fact is it
sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. The problem is either with the
scheduler or bkprunner, or more probably with both. The backup never even
starts - tonight it won't even run with "backup now". I can almost
certainly
cure the problem by using 3rd party backup software, but then a) lose the
SBS
alert which we rely on to monitor servers, and b) have one server
different
to all the others. I am also concerned that this random behaviour is a
sympom of something more serious. Maybe the answer is to move to Linux,
since this appears from the web to be a common problem and Microsoft don't
seem to be interested.

Your experience mimics mine, although I have different hardware.
