Hi Merv,
I requested the hotfix for the registry key.
Curious, why would I install SP1 when I already have SP2?
Regarding the DiscWizard issue, the actual imaging process worked fine. It
was the fact that DiscWizard itself installed some of it's own VSS stuff that
broke Windows'. At the time [9/11/07], DW installed just fine on SBS2003 -
but the latest version from their web site will not... so they apparently
realized there is a problem and clearly don't support the OS anymore. It
wasn't obvious when I did it.
Anyway, I'll keep the DriveImageXML in mind for next time :-)

Since your restore of the image was apparently not entirely sucessful, your
entire server configuration is suspect. And of course, the Seagate
DiscWizard is not supported on Windows Server 2003. A call to Micosoft
Support ($) may be able to get you back up and running (but MS generally
doesn't support restores from image on servers or workstations).
At this point, you might try reinstalling SBS SP1...

I've never used DriveImageXML before others in this newsgroup have indicated
that it works with servers. Of course you would need to reimage your
original drive. There are also other commerical programs ($) that do
imaging well (StorageCracft's ShadowProtect for one).

Just in case you missed this post...
FYI, I'm running the wizard from the Server Management app. I just
realized
there were two other options under Configure Backup; (1) Modify Storage
for
Deleted Files and E-mail, and (2) Configure My Documents Redirection.
If I run (1), I don't have the choice of any options; it goes straight
to
the Finish screen, and says:
The following settings were made regarding deleted items:
No disk space was reserved for deleted files.
Deleted e-mail messages will not be retained.
If I click Finish, I get the same error as I do when running the
Configure
Backup wizard.
(2), I have the option to redirect all my documents folders to the
default
shared folder..., redirect all my documents folders to a network
folder...,
or do not redirect my documents folders. If I select the latter, I get
a
confirmation message, and the screen closes. It did not have any
positive
effect on the backup.
Anything else I can try?

The "Storage Allocation for Deleted Files and Email" screen should
come
right after the "Define Backup Schedule" screen. It allows you to set
"Deleted Item Retention" for recovering mail messages and also to set
the
Volume Shadow Copy space requirements.
If you don't see it in the Configure Backup wizard, you should have a
link
on the Manage Small Business Server Backup page for "Modify Storage
for
Deleted Files and E-mail" which will take you directly into it.

mention
anywhere in the wizard. These are the screens I get:

Modify backup settings (change existing backup settings or do not
use)
Backup Location
Backup Data Summary
Define Backup Schedule
Completing... (Finish screen)
I tried deleting the Small Business Backup Script.bks thinking
that's
why
maybe it was skipping those screens, but no luck.

Background: I bought a new hard drive for our server (SBS
2003),
and
needed
to migrate from the old drive to the new. I installed
Seagate's
(Acronis)
DiscWizard software, and copied the partitions to the new
drive.
Booted
to
the new drive, and for the most part, everything worked.
Problem: The built-in SBS Backup no longer works. Apparently
DiscWizard
clobbered the Volume Shadow Copy Services by installing its
own,
and
not
properly restoring Microsoft's during uninstall. Seagate's
tech
support
was
(as expected) no help, which brings me here.
Errors: This is where I stand right now. In Server
Management,
it
says
"Backup Configuration Wizard has not been run, or backup has
been
disabled."
I click Configure Backup, and walk thru the wizard. After
clicking
Finish, I
get a message box:
Backup Configuration Wizard - An unexpected error occurred
(80070057).
The
parameter is incorrect.
At the end of BackupWizard.log, this is what I get:
Calling CommitRetention()
Error 0x80070057 returned from call to CommitRetention().
Backup Wizard finished with error code 0X80070057.
If I try to force a backup, I get this in the latest
sbsbackuplog##.log
file:
Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.
Error returned while creating the volume shadow
copy:0x8004230f.
Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy:8004230f
Aborting Backup.
If I right-click the C: drive, Shadow Copies tab, I get this:
Failed to retrieve volumes that are eligible for shadow
copies.
Error 0x8004230f: The shadow copy provider had an unexpected
error
while
trying to process the specified operation.
I've googled and googled and googled and tried everything that
I
remotely
thought would help... reinstalling Administrative Tools,
reinstalling
SP2,
re-registering files, applying hotfixes, etc.
I think that if I could somehow reinstall all the VSCS stuff,
everything
would go back to normal... but that's just a thought.,
I'd really appreciate any help! Thanks!
