You cannot 'split' any server component off SBS. The 'expanded CAL rights'
are just that, CALs, they do not include the server license itself. Note
also that the SQL CALs are for SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition only. They
do not cover SQL Standard.
Customer needs:
Hardware.
Windows Server license (no CALs).
SQL Server WE license (no CALs).
Only the 'transition pack' allows SBS components to be split.

I am planning on upgrading a client to R2 and I understand that this
includes Client Access license rights to access SQL on a separate server. I
am planning on adding a new server and installing SQL. The question is will
the version of SQL that comes with R2 install onto a separate machine? If
not what should the customer purchase?
