RE: Loosing profile on computers within SBS 2003 domain

Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that some domain users logon
client computer will create new local profile. If I have misunderstood the
problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can
resolve this issue:

1. This is mostly relate to the antivirus software on client computers. If
you install any antivirus software on client computers, please uninstall it
and test this issue.

2. This issue may relate to network connection issue since you changed the
switch. I suggest you force the problematic client computers to use TCP
instead of UDP for Kerberos.

a. Start Registry Editor on clients.
b. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\
Kerberos\Parameters
Note: If the Parameters key does not exist, create it now.
c. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
d. Type MaxPacketSize , and then press ENTER.
e. Double-click MaxPacketSize, type 1 in the Value data box, click to
select the Decimal option, and then click OK.
f. Quit Registry Editor.
g. Restart your computer.

3. Ensure the domain user account has full control permission of the
profile folder on client computer: C:\Documents and Settings\Username.

4. Please open the user account properties on SBS, select Account tab,
ensure the account is not locked out.

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Does this issue happen on all domain users?

2. Does the problematic user create new profile every time when it logon?

3. Does this issue only happen on the separate client computers?

4. If you logon problematic user account into good client computer, does
the issue reoccur?

5. If you logon good user account into problematic client computer, does
the issue reoccur?

6. Save the application event log and system event log as evt files on the
problematic machine and send to my mailbox: v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

| I have a client running an SBS 2003 for the last 3 years. We have
recently
| encountered a problem that is perplexing.
|
| There are about 25 computers added to domain. Computers run XP Pro and
| WIN2000. Users login using domain accounts WITHOUT roaming profiles.
|
| Roughly once a week, 1 or more users, when logging in, will loose their
| profile. A new profile folder is created in DOCS AND SETTINGS. The new
| folder takes on the tradition AD naming conventions when this occurs.
|
| When I look up the profile in the registry, it shows the new DOCS and
| SETTINGS folder name. Yet, the old DOC and SETTINGS folder (profile) is
| where the user's information is. Essentially, what is happening, the
user
| logs in and the comptuer thinks the user is a new user and creates a new
| profile.
|
| I reviewed all event logs...there are no errors. The security audit log
is
| clean, no failures. The SID's all match up.
|
| What is even more interesting is there is only one profile noted for this
| user when I look up profiles from the System Tools (Control Panel).
There
| are a few "unknown accounts" in the profile list. I suppose one of these
is
| the old profile that is not identifiable.
|
| I can't seem to figure out the cause of this problem.
|
| All computers are getting updates from their local update services. We
were
| running WSUS but that was disabled via GP back in May. I uninstalled
WSUS
| form SBS2003 today just to clean things up.
|
| The original SBS2003 was migrated from NT using the MS migration tools.
It
| was a clean migration. We were running fine up until now. I doubt that
we
| have issues related from that migration.
|
| There were no changes to configurations or anything in the last six
months
| other than a failed SonicWall router that was replaced.
|
| We have new network switches added about 6 months ago as well.
|
| Any ideas???
|
