Wow. You're a rarity!

a relatively new tape drive (replacing a dodgy SCSI one). Looks like
another new drive - this is becoming an expensive server.

What kind of drives are you buying? I've got several SDLT & LTO drives
(HPs, Dells) going at client sites (on dedicated SCSI controllers) and have
had few problems to speak of.
