<Well you do have a point.
<However I would like to point out that for me, which was the first time I
needed to use that wizard, this behaviour was not clear and trully
unexpected.
<For a first-time user of the wizard you just assume: well since I have
sbs
and this great tool, let me use it and let it do all the work for me.
<And there is no mention to this DHCP 'gotcha'. This is incorrect.
<Maybe not a bug. But still not correct.
<It should at least bring to my attention the fact that, after the change,
I should go into DHCP and review the number/range of distributed IPs.
After
all, during the SBS Setup Wizzard, along with choosing the server IP, I am
asked which DHCP range to use/distribute. I expect to be consulted.
<Ideally, the change my IP wizzard should include a tab to set up the new
DHCP scope, for the IP. Or, again, at least warn me that it is going to
change the scope.
<Also note that the range that Wizzard automatically set up was configured
to distribute included the IP of the SBS server itself! One would assume
it
would at least leave out the IP of the server.
<If you know the email address where one can submit wishes/requests for
future sbs realeases please do tell me.
<Also, I hope that by sharing my experience no one gets caught in this
tiny
little "gotcha'.
<Thank you

< We'll assume that your previous LAN IP was 192.168.1.X and you had your
DHCP server on the SBS modified to restrict the number of IPs and reserve
certain others.
< Now you come and run the wizard and tell it my new LAN IP is going to
be
192.169.16.X. The logical assumption would be that those
reservations/modifications would no longer be valid as the SBS server
would
have no connectivity to them in that subnet and so it modifies the DHCP
server config accordingly.
< When MS designs these "wizards" it has to use the 80/20 rule. What
would 80% of the folks expect to happen?
< It may not have behaved as you expected, but its not a bug

< I would totally agree with you.
< If I change the server Ip I need to change the assigned IPs to match
it.
< However it should not change the range it distributes.
< If you have DHCP server set up to distribute from 192.168.1.100 t o
192.168.1.150 (distributing 50 addresses) after you run the wizzard it
will
reset it to, for example, 192.168.16.1 to 192.168.16.254 (254 addresses).
< I intentionally left out 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.99 and 192.168.1.151
to 192.168.1.254 on the original configuration and have assigned static
IPs
from those excluded ranges to printers and servers.
< The wizzard should not come and reset the scope to xxx.xxx.xxx.1
through
xxx.xxx.xxx.254. It should respect the fact that I only wanted to hand out
50 addresses. Or AT LEAST inform me that it was going to reset the DHCP
server to a new scope and give me a change to correct it.

< This is not a bug. This is exactly what this wizard is designed to
do.
< Why would you change the server's internal IP and not expect DHCP to
hand out addresses in that range
< That's what the wizard does, not only does it change the internal
NIC's IP
< But
< Resets DHCP server to use that range
< Resets WINS
< Resets DNS
< etc.

< Hi
< Just wanted to share something that may cause some trouble:
< If you run the Change My Server IP wizard, it may reset the DHCP
leases to
< use all the range on your local subnet.
< I had setup sbs 2003 with this:
< IP: 192.168.1.1 / Subnet 255.255.255.0
< DHCP: distributing IPs from 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.150
< After running the Change My Server IP wizzard, I entered the new IP:
< IP 192.168.16.1 / Subnet 255.255.255.0
< The wiazzrd updated the DHCP server BUT started distributing IPs from
< 192.168.16.1 to 192.168.16.254 !
< It did not keep the original range.
< I accidentally noticed this while testing a client workstation after
the
< change. Running ipconfig I noticed the client had an IP outside the
intended
< scope, having missed the server's IP by 1!!
< I don't know which is the propper way to report the bug but the fact
is that
< the wizzard gave me no explicit warning that he was not going to
respect the
< DHCP server's IP range.
< Thanks
< Pedro.
