What sort of controller? Go on, surprise me, tell me it's not an LSI.
Otherwise I'd be looking at SCSI termination. Are you relying on the drive
for termination or using an active terminator?
As my mate Jan recently reminded me 'Mick, it's SCSI, if it's going wrong
it's the controller, cable or terminator.', he was right, yet again.(brand
new but bad cable)

I have researched this on the web exhaustively without finding a solution.
The server is not running IBM Universe or Trend products, I have applied
the
hotfixes, and the only fix I have found is to delete the job, stop the
scheduler service, wait for a hour and then recreate the job. the backup
will then run for a few days then fail again with the same message. I can
usually (but not always )use the "backup now" option in server manager to
run bkprunner manually after the scheduled job has failed. The tape drive
is
an HP5683A SCSI DDS4 drive which we use on other servers without problem
.
