RE: Connect Computer Wizard Default Gateway Settings

Hello Matt,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that the client computer's
default gateway changed after you run connectcomputer wizard on it. If I
have misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, if you improperly run the CEICW, you will get this
problem. After you run the CEICW, the wizard will create a file called
config.dat file in c:\program files\Microsoft windows small business
server\clientsetup\setup. When you run the connectcomputer wizard on
client, the client will copy the file from SBS to client, and configure the
client computer thru the settings in the file. The file includes the client
side default gateway setting.

We have 2 methods to resolve this issue:

Method 1: Rerun the CEICW properly:

Go through the follow KB and rerun CEICW carefully.

How to configure Internet access in Windows Small Business Server 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825763/en-us

I suppose your SBS has one network adapter, and manual router connection to
broadband. Please run the CEICW thru the following detail steps:
a. On the Connection Type page, click Broadband, and then click Next.
b. On the Broadband Connection page, under My server uses, click A local
router device with an IP address, and then click Next.
c. On the Router Connection page, next to Preferred DNS server and next to
Alternate DNS server, type the IP addresses that are provided by your ISP.
In the Local IP address of router box, type the IP address of the router
that the server uses to connect to the router.
d. Click to select the My server uses a single network connection for both
Internet access and the local network check box, and then click Next.
e. A message may appear that warns that the firewall that is provided
cannot be configured. You are offered a chance to view information about
configuration settings for an existing firewall device.
f. On the Network Connection page, click Server Local Area Connection
under the Connection Name.
g. Click Next.

The CEICW will configure the config.dat file with the correct default
gateway value (your router IP). Then, the client default gateway will not
be changed.

Method 2: Manually modify the config.dat file (not recommended)

On SBS server, locate on the config.dat file under c:\program
files\Microsoft windows small business server\clientsetup\setup. Open the
file with Notepad, find the DefaultGateway value, modify, save and exit

Additional, I suggest you set all the client computers obtain IP address
automatically, but not set them manually. In SBS network, after you run
CEICW, the DHCP on SBS will be properly configured. After the client start
up, they will get proper IP and default gateway and DNS from DHCP on SBS.

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

| Does the Connect Computer Wizard reset the default gateway settings on
the
| client machine? The reason I ask is that I was pretty certain that it
| didn't, but then all of a sudden I had a machine show up with my SBS
server's
| Internal IP address as the default gateway (instead of the default
gateway
| that was previously configured).
|
| I recognize that the "recommended" install is to have the SBS proxy
| everything, but for our purposes that won't work (we're using SBS
Standard,
| so no ISA, and our internet firewall does a fine job of filtering and
NATing,
| so I don't want to bog down the SBS).
|
| If ConnectComputer does set this, is there are way I can make it not
change
| it??
|
| Thanks!
