Re: Unix Identity Management on SBS 2003 R2

Thanks for the response... I spent some time playing with this today, and I
can't seem to get it to work as simply as it should be..

I agree that it is probably best to avoid running the NIS server on the SBS
(though I would actually like to confirm that it works for another project).
But doesn't the software (or at least admin tools) have to be loaded on the
SBS server to ensure it knows how to assign the Unix attributes??

Further testing, and I installed the Unix Identity Management software on
the R2 Server (that is a DC), but the "Unix Preferences" tab (or whatever
it's named) doesn't show up... and Server for NIS kept throwing errors on
startup... after a couple reboots, the same thing occured...

Subsequently I got ambitious, and ran the Unix Identity Management install
program from the R2/Components directory, and low and behold it is working..
I can click on the properties of a user and populate the user/group info for
the Unix tab.

I haven't been able to get NIS working from a Debian install, but that may
be client side setup.. but I was able to enumerate stuff using ypcat from the
cmd prompt, so I think I'm good to go.

We previously tested this with SFU 3.5, and that populated stuff in LDAP,
and seemed easier to configure on the Linux side.. any opinions on what is
the best option (UIM/NIS, or SFU/LDAP)?? It looked like SFU was going to be
a bigger "bloat" on the server than UIM and Server for NIS... true?

On the specific question - there's no reason at all that you can't install
Unix ID Mgmt on your Server 2k3 R2 server, assuming it's a DC. And your
clients will work as expected.

On using SFU - that is supported and does work, if you'd prefer that option.
I've done it, but mostly prefer to keep everything I don't absolutely have
to have on the SBS box off of it. Since you have an option here, I'd go with
that.

Will my AD Schema be messed up? It would seem that I would be able to
have
the extensions loaded into AD, and properly replicated even if I can't
manage
the Unix properties from the SBS AD MMC console...

Alternatively, I could use the Services for Unix (SFU), and NOT THE R2
features.. that changes things on the Unix side though, so I'm not sure
this
is a better approach... can SFU be run on SBS?
