Down hard means normally a call to MS. I'm not sure if the group can help
you to get it up within a reasonable time. But we can try.

Can you post the complete errors from the event logs - especially the System
event log?

So some point Sat early AM don't know if we had a power hit or what
but it seems alot of stuff got corrupt on my C drive. I'm running SBS
2003 R2 latest patches and I was getting all sorts of disk errors. I
did a chkdsk and a reboot and seems to have stopped the errors but now
I cannot get IIS Admin service to start which runs just about
everything we really need (E-mail + RPC/E-maiil for phones).

The error I'm getting when trying to start from services console is:

Could not start the IIS Admin Service service on Local Computer
Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified

Is there anyway to find out a more verbose log of the startup on
inetinfo. It seems that (C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv\inetinfo.exe)
runs just about everything. It has the same file size as the same
file on another server. The version # 6.0.3790.1830 (srv03_sp1_rtm.
050324-1447).

Anyone have any clue how to troubleshoot a process that won't start.
Obviously we are down hard right now so I'm one step away from calling
MS. I have a backup of a few days ago C but it seems that .exe did
not get backed up for some reason :((((. Also, I have been having
backup problems without knowing for the past few weeks on a E drive
(Storage data) due to another admin enabling Shadow Copies without
telling me.. So I only have that one backup that seems to be valid.

I see alot of MS KB's saying re-install IIS. Unfortunately on SBS it
seems reinstalling IIS is a SUPER pain and might as well do a full OS
re-install. Is there any other way to get these files restored?

PLLLLZZZ HELP :)

thanks in advance,

-phil

Welp, I had a corrupt system log and the whole boat. So system logs
were not much use as I had to clear to get them working again due to
corruption error. After about 10hrs I think I got everything back
up. The IIS nightmare mentioned above ended up just being a corrupt
metadb. I found that the file "MetaBase.xml" was MIA in the
%systemroot%\system32\inetsrv\ directory. So I copied over a auto
backup of the file right before the server died from "C:\WINDOWS
\system32\inetsrv\History". The Schema file seemed to re-generate on
it's own. I also have verified my RAID-1 consistency and everything
seems to be clean again. no more errors in event logs:)

I ended up determining there was a serious storm. Power lost at the
office for about 3hrs. It seems the UPS was configured to shut down
the OS when the UPS reaches 'warning' level (30% left battery).
Problem was, 30% was not enough to shut down (2~min) so I suspect that
the battery died mid-shutdown and caused corruption. I'm raising
warning level to 50% and hope that will help.

I hope I don't find any further problems but crossing my fingers.
We'll see what happens tomm when people show up. I plan on testing
the new UPS settings tomorrow night while fresh in my mind among re-
testing some reboots to be sure all well..

Thanks

.
