While you can't install just the ESM from the SBS media. There is no problem
doing this from the Exchange Standard media. It is a known issue with BES -
and yes, you do need to upgrade ESM on the BES to match your Exchange Server
version.
We have quite a few clients that use BES and in all but one case we run BES
on the SBS box which eliminates the issue. There are no problems and you
only have to make some minor changes on the BES install. One of them (if you
are using BES 4.1 and you have ISA running) is to change the Apache website
port. Make sure that you do follow the BES install to the letter. That
includes creating a user (BESAdmin or something else) with the proper
permissions. Otherwise you will run into problems.
If you want to leave BES on the current box, you need to get the media for
Exchange Standard to install ESM on that box.

I ran into a problem with SBS2000 in that I could not install just the
Exchange System Manager. I needed this to get a BES (Blackberry Enterprise
Server) to talk to my SBS2000/Exchange 2000 server.
Now I am upgrading my domain to SBS2003 DC with Exchange 2003. I suspect I
will need to upgrade the System Manger on the BES to 2003 as well. Is
there
now a way to install just the System Manager from the SBS2003 media?
Also, since I have never done this particular combination, is there any
compatibility issue with E2003 System Manager on a Win2K member server
(again, the BES)?
