RE: SBS 2003 SP2 fails to install

Hello ken,

Thank you for posting here.

According to your description, I understand that you unable to install
Windows server 2003 sp2 on SBS and get error message. If I have
misunderstood the problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can
resolve this issue:

Step 1:
1) Stop Cryptographic Services from services.msc

2) Browse to
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}

3) Create a temporary folder to backup some .cat files.

4) move all KB*.cat, Q*.* and TMP*.cat files to the folder you created in
Step 3).

5) If you moved KB91235.CAT, then copy it back to the

C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} folder.

6) Rename the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CATROOT2\ folder. Create a Blank folder
named CATROOT2

7) Start Cryptographic Services from services.msc

8) Start the Installation of SP2.

Step 2: Ensure you had installed SBS 2003 sp1 before you install Windows
server 2003 sp2

Step 3: Please try to do clean boot on SBS and then install Windows server
2003 sp2 again:

To clean boot the problematic computer, please use the steps below:
a. Click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks). Click OK.

b. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click to select
the Selective Startup button.

c. Click to clear the check mark from the "Load startup items" below
Selective Startup.

d. Click the Services tab, click to check the "Hide All Microsoft Services"
box, and remove all the check marks from the remained Non-Microsoft
Services. Please note that the Exchange services could be marked as
non-Microsoft. Please do not disable those services.

e. Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked to
restart your computer in order to enable the changes.

f. After restarting, please check whether this issue will reoccur.

Step 4: If the issue persists after above steps, please try to reinstall
the Windows server 2003 sp2 from Add or Remove Programs, and then try to
install Windows server 2003 sp2 again.

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Please help me gather the following log:

a. Delete C:\Windows\Svcpack.log. (Before you apply the SP2)

b. Reproduce the problem.

c. Send C:\Windows\Svcpack.log to me for research.

2. Please gather the KB914961.log in C:\WINDOWS folder and send to my
working mailbox v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

3. Please download and run the setup MPS report tool on the SBS 2003 server.

a. Visit
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.exe to download the file.
b. Run the MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.exe on the server box.
c. Wait for 10~15 minutes.
d. Open Windows explorer, navigate to
%SYSTEMROOT%\MPSReports\Setup\Reports\cab
e. Send the .cab file to my mailbox: v-terliu@xxxxxxxxxxxxx

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

| Hello,
|
| I have previously successfully installed SP2 via Automatic Windows
| Updates (the little yellow icon that appears in the system tray) on
| SBS2003 a couple of times, but now have one server that is giving me
| the following error:
|
| Failed to install catalog files.
|
| Thinking there was a problem with the automatic updates, I downloaded
| the whole SP2 file and manually extracted it to SBSSP2 folder and ran
| the \update\update.exe file and now get this error:
|
| "Could not verify the integrity of the file update.inf
| Make sure the cyptographic service is running on this computer"
|
| I have checked Microsoft's site and found several other people hjave
| run into a similar problem and used the following KB articles:
|
| http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798
| You cannot install some updates or programs
| - I have followed steps 1-10
|
| http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940276
| You may be unable to apply more updates at a certain point on a
| Windows Small Business Server 2003-based computer
| - I have ran both batch files
|
| There is an entry in the Add/Remove Programs for "Windows Server 2003
| Service Pack 2" that I am contemplating removing.
|
| Should I do that and retry the installation????
|
| Afterwards, I just found the file fixdb.bat that says it fixed a similar
| problem (and has many of the same fixes that I manually ran), and ran it
| after a reboot. Rebooted the server after it ran and retried the SP2
| installation. It got farther along in the install but failed at the same
| point as the first time:
|
| Failed to install catalog files.
