RE: Offline files, VPNs (PPTP) and Slow Link Detection

In adiditon (but a little off topic), I would like to know where the "connect
use dial up" option has gone from the CRTL+ALT+DEL logon under Vista
(Buisness). Or do these client OSs work in a different manner.

Terence,

Many thanks for this informative reply.

To confirm, if a slow link is detected, then certian GPO policies will not
be applied including folder redirection - is this true when the user logs in
at the CRTL+ALTLDEL screen via a dial up VPN?

In addition, although you state that "the offline files has no relationship
with Slow link detection", I can assume that if the folders such as "My
Document" are NOT redirected then you will not actually have them as offline,
and no version will exisit on the server. Of course, the user may make other
network folders/files avaliable offline if they so wish at anytime when
connected via the VPN.

Hello Chris,

Thank you for posting here.

I ask several questions about Offline files, VPN and Slow Link. Here, I
want to answer your question based on my knowledge.

1. Logon domain and VPN.

a. If you dial VPN first before logon computer, and then logon SBS domain
when logon computer. This is the like the normal domain logon process in
LAN. You dial up the VPN first to SBS server, this is prepare network
connection. After the VPN establish, we can logon SBS domain like in LAN.
In this scenario, all SBS GPO will be apply to the VPN client computer.

b. If you logon the computer first, and then dial up the VPN to SBS server,
the logon is use the local cache account information. In fact, the client
computer does not logon SBS domain. Then, you dial up the VPN, the SBS does
not know the client logon domain, and will not apply the newest GPO to the
VPN client. In this scenario, I think the automatic synchronization does
not happen.

2. Slow link detection

When Slow link detection Group Policy is applied to the computer or to the
user, the IP slow link detection mechanism is always used. By default, if a
slow link is detected, some forms of Group Policy are not applied
(including Application Deployment, Scripts, Folder Redirection, Disk
Quotas). For more information about which Group Policy components do not
apply, and about how to modify this behavior, click the following article
number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Default behavior for Group Policy extensions with slow link

How a slow link is detected for processing user profiles and Group Policy

Therefore, if the client detected slow link, it will disable folder
redirected. However, the offline files has no relationship with Slow link
detection.

I hope these steps will give you some help.

Thanks and have a nice day!

| Hi,
|
| I trying to figure out what can happen with folder redirection and
offline
| files over VPNs (PPTP) on a slow(ish) DSL link.
|
| Firstly, I need to get something straight. For any kind of automatic
| GPO/folder redirection/offline file synchronisation to be applied to a
remote
| computer (Windows 2000 SP4/XP SP2), does that user HAVE to log onto the
| computer at the CTRL+ALT+DEL screen and tick the box to log in via dial
up?
| If a user simply initiates the VPN connection when already logged into a
| computer, will any kind automatic synchronisation happen?
|
| Next, slow link detection. I believe that SBS does not have the feature
| configured by default (at least I cant see it looking at the settings of
the
| GP objects), so the slow link is taken at 64kpbs, correct? Does that mean
| that a remote user who logs into SBS via a VPN (at say 500kpbs) should
have
| all folder redirected and offline files enabled (possibly with the
provisos
| mentioned above)?
|
| I take it that it is possible for a manual synchronisation to be
conducted,
| no mater what the link speed, buy right clicking on the folder (say My
Docs)
| and choosing to synchronise?
|
| I have read about a few gotchas with offline files and VPNs, but have not
| looked into this to much as yet.
|
