RE: cidaemon.exe cycling CPU activiy bettween 0-70%

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hello Chris,

Thank you for posting here and also thanks to Claus and SG for the input.

From your post, I understand that Cidaemon.exe uses up a large amount of
CPU resource. If I have misunderstood your concern, please feel free to
correct me.

I think it is normal.

Cidaemon.exe is the processes of Indexing Service which runs in the
background and catalogs files so that you can search for files containing a
specific text string. It will make searching faster.

While it is building the catalog, it may cause the high CPU usage. It's
normal and there's nothing to worry about.

If the performance of the system is very sluggish, you can try the steps
below to re-create the catalogs and turn off filter files with unknown
extensions:

A. Click Start, click Search.
B. Click Change preferences and then click With Indexing Service (for
faster local searches).
C. Click Change Indexing Service settings (Advanced).
D. Note down the existing catalogs.
E. Stop and then delete all the catalogs.
F. Re-create the catalogs.
G. Right-click on the blank area and click Properties.
H. Select the "Index files with unknown extensions" check box, click OK.
I. For each catalog, right-click on it and click Properties, on the
Generation tab, make sure neither "Index files with unknown extensions" nor
"Inherit above settings from Service" is checked.

If this still doesn't help the situation, the resolution is to set the
Indexing Service to manual and stop the service from Services in
Administrative Tools.

Hope this helps.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions or if you need
further assistance.

| Hi all,
|
| Is it normal to see the process cidaemon.exe continually cycle CPU usage
| between 0-70%? I have three cidaemon.exe process running, and using
Process
| Explorer, you can see what exactly has spawned then. The one that takes
CPU
| cycles is to do with "system volume information" (full command line:
| "cidaemon.exe" DownLevelDaemon "c:\system volume information\catalog.wci"
| 196672l 1516l). The other processes are to do with IIS ("cidaemon.exe"
| DownLevelDaemon "c:\inetpub\catalog.wci" 196672l 1516l) and Sharepoint
Search
| ("cidaemon.exe" DownLevelDaemon "c:\fpse_search\catalog.wci" 196672l
1516l),
| but do not casue an issue.
|
| I know that the process priority is set to idle so that it will be
ignored
| should other processes require CPU time, but I would still like to knwo
if
| this behaiviur is "normal", and if there is anything that can be done to
| eliminate it (or even if it should be eliminated).
|
