Re: SBS 2003 Backup exclude not working

Claus,

C: is my OS
D: is my main server volume and shares
C: and D: are RAID 1

F: is a secondary storage volume for overflow/lower priority stuff (no RAID)

G: is my external USB HDD which is rotated every week or two among 3
different units.

I first noticed a problem when I got larger external drives and went from
keeping one backup to 3. The backup was not finishing overnight like it used
to but was taking most of the next day too. Also the size had jumped from
about 130GB to over 200GB. What's wierd that I am noticing now is that the
extra time and size seems to be in the "SOUNDTEL5\Microsoft Information
Store\First Storage Group" That is about 43GB one day and 118GB the next. Now
I am really confused because I thought it had something to do with shadow
copy settings for g: which I had turned on but have since disabled.

Here is my log from a large backup day:

Dale,

What is on D and F? From your description it looks very much like you are
doubling up. Have you had a look at the backup file to determine what causes
the increase in size?

Claus,

SBS backup exclude that folder automatically and I have also manually
excluded that whole drive.

Here is my script:
SystemState
| C:\
| D:\
| F:\
| G:\ /Exclude
| G:\Backup Files\ /Exclude
| JET SERVER\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group\

The problem I am having is that SBS backup seems to be ignoring the
exclusions of the backup folder and drive G:

When you run the wizard you have to exclude the folder where the backups
are
stored. You also should exclude any other folders that are not needed.

Claus,

I am using the built in SBS backup.

Manfred,

I have set the backup wizard to keep two backups M-F and every other
backup
takes almost twice as long and is almost twice the size of the one
before
it

Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here.

From your post, I understand that SBSBackup seems to back up previous
backup data.

Firstly I would like to confirm how many backups are set to be stored
on
the SBS server?

Do you mean that the later backup is always twice as large as the
previous
one?

I suggest you perform a manual backup to verify it:

1. Open Server Management, click Backup node.
2. Click Backup Now.
3. After the backup is finished, please check the latest backup file.

If it is twice as large as the previous backup file, I suggest you try
following steps to check if it works:

1. Open Server Management, click Backup node.
2. Click Configure Backup to reset the settings.
3. Click Start-->Run, type ntbackup and click OK.
4. Click Advanced Mode to switch to Advanced Mode
5. Click Backup tab, click Job-->Load Selections
6. Load following file:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\Backup\Small
Business Backup Script.bks

7. Please check if the selections are correct. If not, please modify
it.
8. Click Job-->Save Selections to save the script file and then exit
NTBackup.
9. Open Server Management, click Backup node.
10. Click Backup Now and check if it works normally.

I hope the above information is helpful to you. If the problem still
occurs, please help me gather following information:

1. Test:
=====
1. Click Start-->Run, type ntbackup and click OK.
2. Switch to Advanced Mode
3. Click Backup tab, select the drives and folders you would like to
back
up.
4. Click Start Backup button.

After that, please check if NTBackup only backed up the objects you
selected.

2. Please send backup Logs to v-mzhuan@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

a. The Backupxx.log files in the folder 'C:\Documents and Settings\SBS
Backup User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
NT\NTBackup\data'.

Or 'C:\Documents and Settings\CurrentUserName\Local
Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data'

b. The Sbsbackuplog0x.log files which can be located under the folder
'%sbsprogramdir%\Support\Backup Logs'.

3. Please send me following file:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows Small Business Server\Backup\Small
Business Backup Script.bks

4. Please open G:\backup files folder, click View-->Details. Then
capture
a
screenshot.

To capture the image, we can perform the steps below:

(a) When the error message appears, press the Print Screen key several
times (this key is located to the right of the F12 key on the
keyboard)
(b) Open Paint ['start' => 'All Programs' => 'Accessories' =>
'Paint'].
(c) Click Edit (menu) -> Paste or press Ctrl + V.
(d) Click File (menu) -> Save. Save it as a .jpg or .gif file and send
it
to me as an attachment.

Best regards,

Manfred Zhuang(MSFT)
