Re: Web Server Problem - Web Server Stops Working

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

I'm having this issue as well. I am running SBS 2003 standard (No ISA, single
NIC) and am current on my patches, except I have not applied Server 2003 SP2.

When the issue manifests my DNS is working as I can resolve local computers
and still access the internet. Nothing "web"related on the server works. I
have used IIReset a few times and that works, but I'd like to get to the
cause as this is terribly inconvienient since I use RWW to maintain this
server and when this issue occurs I am cut off.

Hi there,

I did think of DNS but that seems to be ok. I can ping companyweb and the
server responds fine. Equally nslookup return the correct results.

Also, sharepoint admin from within the server and the server management
pages with active www content don't work either. Those check localhost so
they don't use DNS (I don't think).

Thanks for the help anyway! TG

Just a thought, could this be DNS related? At the command prompt if you do:
nslookup companyweb
you should get the ip address of your server coming back. Do you? (or do you
when its not working?)

For example, if a workstation is getting its dns information from a router
rather than from the SBS server then it wouldn't obtain the correct IP
address and this might fit your symptoms - at least as far as companyweb is
concerned. Not sure that its applicable to remote access and I don't use
sharepoint so don't know whether or not its relevant for that. Could be a
dead end, but something to check.

I wondered if someone could help me diagnose a problem I've been having on
my
SBS server. I'm running SBS 2003 on an HP box in a pretty standard config.

Just recently we've developed a problem where every week or so the web
server component appears to stop working. By this I mean, everything that
is
run from IIS, i.e. companyweb, remote access or sharepoint adnimistration
completely stops working. When I try to access any of these services
through
a web browser (Both locally and remotely) I get the standard "Internet
Explorer cannot display the webpage".

Just to give some additional info there are no errors in the event log at
all when this happens. Nothing else is affected and I can't see any
stopped
services which migh account for this. Looking in IIS all the web sites are
'running' and IIS appears to be fine. There are no errors anywhere that I
can
detect!

I have tried restarting all the relevant services including IIS admin, WWW
publishing, HTTP SSL etc but this does nothing to help. So far the only
thing
that does work is restarting the server but obviously this is not
practical
every few days.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don't know where else to look!
