RE: move users shared data in sbs2003 to another server

Hello Chris,

There is a update for you.

I have a mistake in my previous reply.

=============
Based on my test, after we run the Configure My Documents Redirection
wizard, the Add User wizard does not change the default setting of the user
shared folders. The Add User wizard still create user shared folders under
original location. However, the folder are empty. In fact, the domain user
will store they documents in the new location on file server.
=============

The Add User wizard will create user shared folders for new user in the
following location:
\\SBSname\Users\UserName

This is a UNC path, and does not change. Therefore, we need to make the new
shared folder which used for the user shared folders shared with the same
name "Users":

IMPORTANT: If you are using the Windows Small Business Server Add User
Wizard, the Users Shared Folders will not be created if you change the
share name from Users. Please use the "Users" for the shard name of the new
Users Shared Folders. Then, the Add User wizard will create user folder in
the new location.

Note: Please stop the sharing of old Users Shared Folders, and delete it.

I'm sorry for my mistake.

Hope the information help.

Thanks and have a nice day.

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

| Hello Chris,
|
| Thank you for posting here. Let's thank John and Russ for the input.
|
| According to your description, I understand that you want to move the
user
| shared folders from SBS to another file server. If I have misunderstood
the
| problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.
|
| Based on my research, I agree with Russ. We can do it. I suggest we try
the
| following steps to see if we can resolve this issue:
|
| 1. Please join the file server to SBS domain. After we join the file
server
| to SBS domain, the file server will be able to configure the share
folders
| NTFS permission with domain accounts.
|
| 2. Create shared folder on file server, configure properly NTFS
permission
| on the shared folder. You can reference to the original user shared
folders
| NTFS permission on the SBS. Then, we can move all contents from SBS to
file
| server. For all of these, you can reference to the "Moving Data Folders"
| white paper:
|
| Moving Data Folders for Windows Small Business Server 2003
|
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=a1d0af69-1287-4225-
| bd8b-59c89f44984b&displaylang=en
|
| Note: Move user shared folders is the step 3 in the document.
|
| 3. Then, we need to modify the My Documents Redirection location for all
| user accounts on SBS. To achieve this goal, we need to run "Configure My
| Documents Redirection" wizard:
|
| a. Please open Server Management console, extend to Users node, click
| Configure My Documents Redirection link in right panel
|
| b. Select Redirect all My Documents folders to a network folder option,
and
| input the network path of the file server new shared folder for users
data.
|
| c. Click OK
|
| d. The wizard will update the folder redirection group policy on SBS.
Then,
| we need to restart SBS and client computers to apply the new group policy.
|
| Based on my test, after we run the Configure My Documents Redirection
| wizard, the Add User wizard does not change the default setting of the
user
| shared folders. The Add User wizard still create user shared folders
under
| original location. However, the folder are empty. In fact, the domain
user
| will store they documents in the new location on file server.
|
| I hope these steps will give you some help.
|
| Thanks and have a nice day!

| | We have sbs2003 server with user shared data and other 2003 servers
| | for file sharing and sql. We wish to maintain the sbs2003 server and
| | move the user shared data to the windows 2003 file server. Have read
| | the "Moving Data Folders for Windows Small Business Server 2003" which
| | details how to move the user shared data to another volume or
| | partition. But this does not appear to cover moving to a another
| | server. Have also read in other postings that you can move the data to
| | another server but the Add new wizard in sbs2003 does not then find
| | the new location.
| |
| | Hope someone can clarify if it is possible to move user shared data to
| | another server and also maintain the add new user wizard in sbs2003
| | such that it will create any new user data folders at the new location
| | on the windows 2003 file server. Or are we limited to only moving to
| | on partitions directly attached to the sbs2003 server
