Re: Extend my primary partition

SG,
Thanks for the services reminder. I did consider the pagefile which I do
plan on moving to C: before deleting the D partition. I always do a FUL
Backup on Fridays so my source is always available. Also I really do not
have any programs installed on D:\Programs Files that couldn't be
reinstalled easily if necessary. The only application I'm really concerned
about not working after a restore would be Citrix.

You might want to stop all services which are installed as programs on
'D:' and set their startup type to 'disabled', restart (to ensure good
restart), backup (ensuring files are not in use though really your
standard backup should be handling this OK), delete 'D:' (which will
probably not require restart if nothing is in use), recreate as using all
space, restore, restart, change service types back to normal and restart
again.

Got a paging file on 'D:'? If so move it back to 'C:' before 'D:' is
deleted.

Cris and Les,
Thank you both for your inputs and suggestions. Personally I can't see
there being any issues mostly because it is all data with the exception of
D:\Program Files applications. I personally do not see where problems
could exist from as I will be restoring the drive "D" only with a larger
and new partition. As long a "D" is receated as "D" and everything is
restored back there what coud possibly happen. Everything on my oprating
system still points to "D". I'm not looking for "guarantees" just
professional opinions.

A USB drive would do nicely to image to/from. I think I read you have a
4600, and that might be a bit of an issue as it's a fairly old machine I
think, and may not have USB ports, or only USB 1.x. USB 1.x would be very
slow.

But you might be able to add a USB card. I'd suggest looking in the Dell
forums to see if anyone can tell you which cards might work, as the older
Dells were quite fussy (Dell themselves don't support add-in USB).

So in your honest professional opinion you see no problems or issues of
doing it this way. Unfortunately I cannot use any imaging progam or
copying program as I do not have the available 200GB free space to
transfer to and from so tape backup is my only option. I can't see how
D:\Program Files will not work when I restore it back. I mean after all
they are only files and all the dll's still exist on C:\ and everything
will still be pointing to D:\.

This should not be a problem using Drive Imaging...
In theory it should work with the backup wizard as well.

Also Cris here's my thoughts on how I'd like to do it but the boss
is a bit, no make that quite a bit paranoid. D:\ is my DATA drive as
stated. Mostly all data but I do have a D:\Programs Files where I have
applications installed. My suggestion is to make sure D:\ is fully backed
up, repartion D:\ to include the new drive and restore back to the newly
enlarged D:\ partition. Now he is worried that when I bring it back online
and C:\ is up and running that we will run into "corruption" issues
because of registry settings calling DLL's from D:\Program Files.
???????????? Exactly what I was thinking. Your views on any risks on doing
what I suggest?

Are you trying to add the extra drive to the RAID 5 or to the
RAID 1

I have a DELL Power Edge 4600 server. The server has an
integrated dual
channel Perc 3Di RAID controller. On one is my OS configured
RAID 1 (2 x
18GB) SCSI drives. On the second channel is my Data RAID 5 (6 X
73GB - 1 hot
spare) SCSI drives. On my Data array I have 1 primary
partition. The new
drive I added is part of the RAID5 set and of course it shows
as
"Unallocated". I want to extend my primary partition to include
this new
drive. Can this be done using Partition Magic or can anyone
suggest a better
tool and procedure of doing this.thanks in avance.
