You might want to write a batch file to delete the directories just before you run the command line utility. You can have 5 directories, one for each day of the week and create the batch file runs as a task (different task for each day) and schedule it to run every day. The batch file can delete the directory and then run the stsadm.exe utility

I understand what you said in the first place - I was just saying that I started to use that one, but worked out that it was the wrong one.
Shame about having to manually remove the folders.
"Costas" <cpstechgroup@xxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:u9N5sQNEIHA.1184@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxNeil,
The version 2.0 is for WSS 2.0 (companyweb). This isn't the one you want. I posted that just to make sure you don't run the wrong one. As far as having multiple copies, I'm not aware of any way to reduce the number of backups. You can manually delete the directories if you get to have too many of them. But as a backup process, this is the one that will restore everything if the server crashes.

I did try to use the -directory option, but I don't want to keep lots of copies of the backup, unless you can tell me how to achieve this with this command?
Managed to find the v2 command to start with, but quickly realised it was the wrong one!

"Costas" <cpstechgroup@xxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:FAFB722A-4C89-43AD-B9EB-FBD2B2085EDE@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxIf you don't have documents in the site , I would delete the site and try to restore it from the backup. If you have documents already try restoring it to a different site. One thing to keep in mind, is that by using the '-filename' switch you basically back up the site collection only, not the farm.
If you want to backup the whole farm, you need to use the '-directory' switch which will create a directory similar to the one created when you use Central Administration. http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/WSS/en/library/5b2aa5ff-ddbf-46fe-8738-e4d6434c655e1033.mspx?mfr=true
One last thing... make sure you run stsadm from the '\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12' directory, because there is another stsadm.exe application in the '.....\60' directory which is the one for version 2.0

"Neil Jordan" <Neil.Jordan@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:ujIMRxMEIHA.1184@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxYes, good suggestions. Is it best to test the restore back to another site?
"Costas" <cpstechgroup@xxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:EC60C3F0-C6F9-4A60-9070-101C403C080E@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxThat will work but I would do two things. First I will test it to make sure it restores, and then I'll have a couple of batch jobs to make sure that I keep at least two backups for the 'just in case' scenario.

I have now altered to use -filename rather than -directory so that I can overwrite daily
Is this ok to do?

Did you use a UNC path? (e.g. \\ServerName\Share)

"Neil Jordan" <Neil.Jordan@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:O88slMMEIHA.4332@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxThat was there, but it seems not to like using a share, regardless of how it is secured.
Is there any way to limit the number of backups stored, or overwrite the old one each time?
