Hello David,
Thanks for posting in our newsgroup.
From your description, I know that on Windows XP machine with IE 7, youcan't install Microsoft Remote Desktop ActiveX Control. If that's not
right, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Please on my research on this issue, please take the following steps to
see if the problem can be resolved:
Step 1: Please check the IE setting to allow ActiveX download.
1. Open IE 7, click Tools, Internet Options.
2. Click IE Internet Security Settings.
3. Verify Download signed ActiveX controls and Run ActiveX controls and
plug-ins is set to either Enable or Prompt.
4. Click OK and then try again.
Step 2: Please problem may be caused by corrupt IE 7 settings, please reset
IE 7 according the following KB:
How to use Reset Internet Explorer Settings (RIES)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737
Also disable all third party Add-ons
1. Open Internet Explorer and click Tools/ Internet Options.
2. On the Program tab, click Manage Add-ons.
3. Disable all third party Add-ons.
4. Try again.
Step 3: Please make a clean boot on the client workstation to make sure the
problem is not caused third party software:
1. Click Start->Run...->type msconfig and press Enter.
2. Click Services tab and select Hide All Microsoft Services and Disable
All third party Services.
3. Click Startup tab and Disable All startup items.
4. Click OK and choose Restart.
5. After reboot, check whether the problem still occurs.
6. If there are no more problems, please use the above steps to enable
services and startup items one by one in order to figure out the root cause
of this issue.
Step 4:Please logon the workstation with a different user account and try
again.
Please try my suggestions and let me know the result.
If the problem persists, please let me know if all Windows XP with IE 7
workstations have such issue.
I am looking forward to hear from you.
If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know.
Best regards,
Robert Li(MSFT)
