Questions answered - hope this helps:
Where are you located?? Charlotte, NC
** I don't think you will have problems finding a Reseller
Look at the links Russ etc.
Checkout more than one!!
CRM - is that MS CRM?? No, old version of Maximizer. We will upgrade at
some
point but haven't found a better or cost-effective solution. Hoping MS
eventually will have something integrated with Outlook
** Maximizer - This file based. Such databases are NOT good over VPN
VPN actually transfer DATA so for multi-user file based databases
(1) is SLOW and
(2) Prone to Data Corruption as Internet connection is not totally
reliable
Terminal Services would be the answer but since this requires 2nd Server
and Terminal Server
licenses it would $1000 plus hardware!! (although you could use the FREE
VMWare Server to
run the 2nd Server as a "virtual server" if the your server is powerful
enough)
Look at my suggestion for alternative to Terminal Services
http://www.thinsoftinc.com/product_thin_client_winconnect_server_vs.aspx
cost is $ 299 for 3 users (can have upto 21 in blocks of 3)
(We have find Brother and HP Laser printers are good in TS type enviroment
in WinConnect)
{With Terminal Server / WinConnect - the only data transferred is Screen,
Keyboard, Mouse info
to and from your PC to the server. I have several clients who have 2-4
users connected to the main
office via only a 512K broadband connection running accounting
application - works well}
What other Applications installed?? For everyone to access: MS Office,
Maximizer
For my admin and me: Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, etc.).
For
me only: Quickbooks
** Maximiser is the only likely problem via VPN
Photoshop can create BIGish files
Terminal Server / WinConnect - should be used
What kind of files (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint)?? Mostly Word, PP and
graphic design files (PFD, photoshop, etc.)
What do you class as big files in MB?? Not sure what this means
** File size 1Mb, 5Mb etc - Not important if using Terminal Services /
WinConnect
How much data do you have?? We have a 40 gig drive on current server and
that's starting to max out.
** For Backup - 100/200Gb LTO should be OK
Consider http://remote-backup.com/products.htm - not cheap but...
How many users?? 4. Could be a couple more if I can stop having all my
time
spent on computer/VoIP issues.
** We have several VoIP customers but these are 20+ sites with fast
connections
Do you have File based databases or accounting programe?? Not sure. I do
use
Quickbooks - I'm the only one. Not sure if Maximizer is file-based on
not.
** Both Quickbooks and Maximizer are file based
Since Quickbooks on only 1 PC - thats not a problem
It would be nice to know the number of users in total and those that are
likely
to connect simulteneously. All 4 of us (or 6, if I hire more) could
remote
in at the same time. We also use Vertical Televantage as our phone system
and
will be using VoIP.
** I have one company (Web Designers) with Server at owners home
200/400Gb LTO is used as well as Remote Backup service (for Critical data
only)
All connection are ADSL Broadband 4Mbps DownStream / 700K UpStreame
6-8 people connect all day long. Skype is used for comms
**** This is NOT a big installation. You can probably save cost of
co-location
if the server can be located at home ****
I hope this helps. Thanks in advance for any advice, including VPN
devices.
We tried buying a SonicWall TZ180, based on the advice of yet another
data/phone vendor but it won't do what we needed it to do. By luck, the
device was bad, so we were able to return and get a refund (love
newegg!).
I've also had problems with tape backup - ours hasn't worked for almost 2
years, including replacements, although it's hard to tell if it's the
product
or the person I had fixing it.
** Probably a DAT drive??
Anyone suggest using a Cleaning Tape on aregular basis??
A lot of people use the in-built backup software.
It works but its crap! {I'll get shot for this!)
Recommend using VeritasBackupExec
I've been told LTO2 by a few people, but it
will have to be an external device even though the server is 2U.
** 100/200Gb LTO ?
Consider http://remote-backup.com/products.htm - not cheap but...
Remote Backup is good - but I ALWAYS recommend regular Tape Backup too
You really can't beat Tape but make sure you use the cleaning kit
regularly
Don't use USB hard disks
I'm a business owner, not an IT specialist. I really appreciate** I understand. But with IT there are LOTs of different views you need to
everyone's
suggestions!
carefully check your requirements are met at resonable cost.

I'm looking for a good technical person to help me set up SBS 2003 on a
new
server and do ongoing maintenance on a regular basis. We are ready to do
this
asap.
We only have 4 users although our needs are relatively advanced for our
size. We're moving our server to a colocation facility as we transition
to a
virtual company; e.g., we will each work from home offices. We will
remote in
from the home office and access data on the server, including MS
Exchange,
our CRM and data files.
I need someone to:
1) Set up SBS 2003 for 3-4 different user groups.
2) Set up MS Exchange - so far, no one I've used for technical support
has
been able to do this for me on our current server. This is a requirement
for
our new support person.
3) Set up so that we each can remote in from our home offices (e.g., CRM
databases, Exchange to send/receive emails, etc.). Experience managing a
firewall is a requirement.
4) Recommend and set up backup (LTO2?).
5) Do a quick review of the server we are about to buy from Dell to
ensure
it will meet our needs.
6) Ongoing maintenance to check firewall, log files, backups, etc.
Location is not an issue since we have login software. SBS Server 2003
will
come preloaded on the server, which will probably be a Dell.
I will need 5-7 references for anyone whom we seriously consider.
Any suggestions, please post here or email to kfx216 at yahoo.
