Just another way which takes less time...
The inexperience will find Swing - dcpromo / doles long winded and confusing
For many Swing will take longer reading etc!!!

On the other hand a straight forward SBS install take about 2-3 hours
including patches
and creating users etc. You know where you are at when done.

I use BackupExec - its more flexible than SBS built-in
Let the user try the eval and judge for themsleves!!
Most people (in my experience over 80%) will like the flexibility
Being able to RESTORE a mailbox to another SBS system EASILY is a BIG, BIG
plus

Workstation: 15 machines should take about 30-40 mins (doing 2-3
simultanously)

I am in the process of exloring an laternative using BackupExec
Download BackupExec eval - install on the old server
Backup Mailboxes - or backup everything!
Install New Server - clean and simple
Install BackupExec
create users and redirect restored mailbox to "New" user
(I used totally different Server + domain names for testing and it worked
for me...)

Now you just need to Reconnect the workstations:

If the user is called FRED the User profile is stored at
\%systemdrive%\documents and settings\Fred on the PC
Make a backup of this folder first (just in case). The location for this
stored in the registry at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\SID\ProfileImagePath subkey.

Remove PC from domain and back to WORKGROUP

Create users with same name (Fred)
Login as Administrator and run http://servername/connectcomputer to the
new
server and when complete login as the user (Fred)
Log off (must do this for the {Profile folder to be created}

Login as Administrator - you will find \%systemdrive%\documents and
settings\Fred.xxxx is created for the new login
Load Regedit and find HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\SID\ProfileImagePath subkey

this will contain \%systemdrive%\documents and settings\Fred.xxxxx - you
need to change this value to \%systemdrive%\documents and settings\Fred

Now you need to give \%systemdrive%\documents and settings\Fred folder
full rights to the "new" user
right click on user profile --> Properties, Security tab, Add button, add
user and hit ok, select user and check full control check box then hit
Advanced button. On Advanced window, uncheck "inherit from parent..." and
check "Replace permissions...".

Reboot and login as the user ....

Hi, I'm seeking advice on moving a SBS 2K server to new hardware. It's a
small domain with 15 users, a few printers. I'm looking for the best way
