RE: SBS 2003 hangs it's restart after Automatic Updates every month

Hello Customer,

Thank you for posting here.

From your post, I understand that after installing automatic updates, the
server cannot be reboot.

To troubleshoot this issue, we may need to dump memory data which is
difficult to be done in newsgroup. If the issue is urgent to your business,
it is recommended that you contact Microsoft Customer Support Services
(CSS) via telephone so that a dedicated Support Professional can assist you
recover the server in a more efficient manner. Please be advised that
contacting phone support will be a charged call.

For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Support Services phone numbers
and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web
site:

If you would like to continue the troubleshooting here, I suggest you check
if the issue persists in a clean boot environment:

Prepare a Clean Boot environment.
=================
1. Click Start and Click Run, and in the "Open" line, type in "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks) and click OK.
2. Under the Service tab, check "Hide All Microsoft Services", and then
click "Disable All" button. In this way, we can disable all the services
which belong to third-party programs.
3. Under the Startup tab, click "Disable All" button.

4. Click OK.
5. Choose Yes to restart the computer.
6. Check "Don't show this message or launch the system configuration
utility when Windows starts".
7. Please check if the issue persists.

NOTE: We can check on Normal Startup in the General tab to roll back to
Normal Mode after we get this issue resolved.

In addition, I suggest you refer to following article to check if it is
your case:

Shutdown and restart operations are very slow in Windows Small Business
Server 2003

If the problem still occurs, please help me gather following information:

1. If you try to manually shut down the server, what is the result?
2. Please try Safe Mode with network and check if the issue persists.

3. When the issue occurs again, please download the MPS Report tool from
the following link and run it on the SBS server, then send the generated
CAB file to my mailbox v-mzhuan@xxxxxxxxxxxxx for further investigation so
that we can find what the root cause is:

| This is an ongoing issue and my MCSE is not getting a handle on it. I
come
| in on mornings after Microsoft pushes out (makes available) monthly
patches
| and downloads etc.
|
| My server's monitor shows "Windows is shutting down" - but it won't. The
| server is set to do the updates and restart (if needed) at 3:30am. There
is
| no keyboard response at the server. There is no remote entry to the
server
| when this happens. But most other services seem to be up and operating.
I
| have to physically hit the reset button to get things back to normal and
this
| makes me extremely nervous everytime I have to do that.
|
| I have been searching the KB's and newsgroups but not finding much.
Please
| remember I am not a MCSE. Just a poor grunt who has to make things work.
