Hi,
If you are getting problems with Powerchute you could always use the built
in UPS software. I believe one of the MVP's here uses this and never installs
the bundled software that comes with APC UPS device.

Hi Steve,.
Thanks for posting. We have changed the ram chips and installed 4GB for a
few days to see the difference. However, the server was behaving the same
i.e. hanging if not in use and generating the same APC PCBE errors and we
didnt see any performance increase from the server.
I would like to point out that we have installed Windows XP Pro SP2 on the
cpmputer and all the software ie. SQL, APC PCBE and it didnt hang or
generate any error. Also, we have reinstalled the SBS a couple of times and
seen the same problems. Also, the problem is occuring on other computers too
where SBS and APC PCBE is installed.
Since APC does not have a solution, was wondering if someone has anything to
say about it. MS simply says that it is a third party software error and as
such cannot extend much help. However, without a UPS software it is not
advisable to run a server and hence we need the software support badly but
fear that the frequent crashes may corrupt SQL or Exchange databases some
day.
Thank you,

I can't directly give you a reason for the behavior you're seeing. However,
1 GB of RAM is not enough especially since you're running SQL. Most of us
recommend that the max of 4 GB be installed when SQL is present.

Hi,
I have this SBS 2003 R2 server that seems to hang when no one is using
it. For example, when everyone has logged off then after a couple of
hours or so, when anybody is trying to log in we find the server is not
responding. Then we have to manually reset the server and when it
restarts everything seems fine again.
The server has the following running:
Windows 2003
Exchange 2003
MS SQL 2005 Standard Edition (not workgroup that comes with SBS)
Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition
For your information, there is no service scheduled that runs when the
server is idle, e.g. antivirus scans, backups, etc. The HDD space is also
sufficient with several GBs available on each drive. The TEMP folders are
also quite normal and have been cleared. Other than the mentioned
applications, nothing noticeable runs on the server.
The server is a Pentium 4 2.4 GHz box with 1GB RAM and 2 HDD of 80GB. The
task manager does not show much system usage when working normally.
One thing I remember, there is an APC Smart UPS attached to the server
and the PowerChute Business Edition installed on the server. Everyday we
receive about 4-5 emails from the PCBE with the following content:
PowerChute Business Edition has detected the following event:
Communication Lost on Agent server
Now, when we open PCBE Console we are able to view the UPS fine. However,
one thing of note, we have noticed once in a while that when the above
error is generated we tend to find the server quite slow and on
occassions have noticed the server CPU to be at 100% for several minutes.
We have reported this problem to APC and they do not have any solution to
it and have only recommended a total uninstall and a fresh install which
we have done several times and needless to say without much success. The
UPS is connected by serial port.
What could be wrong? Can you please guide us to resolve the problem?
Thanks in advance,
Somnath Ukil
