Re: WSS 2.0 and 3.0

Forget that - found it in IIS not started. Started it and all ok.

Seem to have another entry in IIS for a site for SharePoint still, so may
have to go through and sort that one out now...

Now click on the 'Create Site Collection'. Under 'Web Application' you
should be seeing: http://wss (if you use the same as my example). Give a
title to the site and under URL you should have: http://wss/ (no need to
change the '/' to '/Sites' ) . Select a template, provide the primary
site admin user name and click OK. After you finish go to the command
prompt and type: iisreset /noforce

Create an A record that points to 'wss' with IP the address of the server
(internal address). You should be good to go. Let me know if you have
any issues

It seems that you tried to make the default web site a SharePoint site.
That can create problems to your server. If this is what you tried to
do, intentionally or unintentially, select the SharePoint 80 entry, and
on the next page under 'Delete IIS Web Sites' select: NO.... make sure
this is setup to "No". Follow the steps in my previous post

Go to SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration. Click the Application
Management tab. Select 'Remove SharePoint from IIS Web Site'. Click
on the entry next to 'Web Application and select 'Change Web
Application'. In the window that opens up you should have two
entries: One for the Central Administration and one for the Magiglo
Intranet. If you have more let me know. If you have just these two,
select the 'Magiglo Intranet'. Under 'Deletion Option' make sure
that the name of the site is selected and then select 'Delete IIS Web
Sites'. Click OK

What we do is delete the old site you created and create it again
under port 80.

When you finish that, go to the Application Management tab again and
select 'Create or Extend Web Application'. Click 'Create a new Web
Application'. On the next screen, select 'Create a new website'.
Under Port type 80 and under 'Host header' type: 'wss'. Further down
the list, select 'Create a new application pool', use 'Predefined' as
the account for the application pool (for now, although it should
have its own account) and then click OK (you can streamline the
settings later.

Let me know if it works up to that point

At the moment, I do not appear to have that site, although I thought
I had seen it. At the moment, I have the following:
Default Web Site (Port 80)
SharePoint Central Administration v3 (Port 47901)
Magiglo Intranet (Port 24987)
Microsoft SharePoint Administration (Port 9494)
SharePoint Central Administration (Port 8081)
companyweb (Port 80)

None of them have the intranet host header.

In IIS Manager, is there a web site called 'SharePoint -
intranet80' under 'Web Sites' pointing to the IP of the server with
a host header (click the 'Advanced' button) named 'intranet'.

The reason you get the page for the default web site, is that
either the host header has not been set or there is no 'intranet'

This sharepoint site has some data, but only from today with us
looking at the Gantt functionality, so nothing that can't be
redone. However I do want to find a way if there is one to bring
over some of the data from our old WSS2 site. One step at a time

That means that you already have a SharePoint Web Application at
port 80 with the name 'intranet'. Create an A record for
'intranet' in your DNS server on SBS, that points to the IP
address of the server. Try to access it by typing:
http://intranet Does it work?

If not, go to IIS Manager, and under 'Web Sites' see if there is
a site called 'SharePoint - intranet80'. If one exists, go to
'Properties', click the Advanced button, and see if there is a
host header with the name 'intranet' pointing to port 80. If
nothing of these works, let me know, we'll remove the web
application from within Central Administration and recreate it.

What I described in my earlier post has nothing to do with the
installation of WSS. It is about creating a Web Application
after you install WSS. For post 80 to work, you must supply a
host header on the field below the port entry. Give it the
name for your site (e.g. intranet, or something like that)

I followed the whitepaper to the letter for installing WSS 3.0
on SBS 2003, so I didn't dare do anything differently.

When you created the first Web Application from within
Central Administration, at the section where you create a new
IIS web site, you could have selected port 80, instead of
port 24987, and you could have given the site a host header
name e.g. 'intranet'. Creating a DNS record that points to
the internal IP of the server will allow you to type
http://intranet and bring you to the SharePoint site.

If you don't have content within SharePoint at this point, go
to Central Administration, delete the Web Application and
create a new one following the steps above

I have successfully (I think) followed the guide to install
these two side by side on SBS 2003.

My question is, is there a way to make the WSS 3.0 site
appear in a friendly url like http://intranet etc rather
than the current one
http://server1:24987/sites/intranet/default.aspx

I know it may be simple, but at the moment I can't find it.
