That's a potential firewall issue. Do you have any other problems with the mail server? You should be able to telnet to Exchange from within your network

The settings are correct. when i telnet to the box i get a blinking cursor.
when i press any key i get the following comment "connection to host lost".

As far as telnet to the server did you try to run 'open
servername.domain.local 25' and you didn't get response?
