Re: USB HDD ERROR

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

If it makes you rest any easier, I've seen this behaviour when a USB drive failed during backup. The server wasn't totally hung, but may as well have been as it was almost completely unresponsive. Ctl-Alt-Del took about 1/2 hour to bring up a login, and keystrokes were accepted at the rate of about 1 every 20 seconds ;-).

A hard boot did get it back up again, I don't recall the bios complaining, but it does sound familiar.

Looking over the event logs after the server was back up, it was possible to determine when and what caused the server to become unresponsive. There were no lingering side-effects or consequences, fortunately.

Hello...

Had a major system problem this morning. At 12:45 am this morning the system
encountered an error while backing up the the USB HDD. (see below)

Event Type: Error
Event Source: VolSnap
Event Category: None
Event ID: 14
Date: 10/9/2007
Time: 12:46:01 AM
User: N/A
Computer: Server
Description:
The shadow copies of volume F: were aborted because of an IO failure on
volume F:.

There was also an entry referrencing the C drive aborting shadow copies as
well.

So... when I arrived this morning nobody could log on to their desktops and
the server would not respond to the CTRL-ALT-DEL command. I tried to use RWW
and RDC from my Windows 2003 member server. Neither worked. System was
completely halted. I had to force the server down and restart.

On the restart the system went through the post OK, but stopped with an
error message "Disk Read Error, press CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart". Did this 2
times to the same error. On the third attempt I pressed F8 to check to status
of the RAID. All drives reported OK. So, what disk error?? The USB drive was
not plugged in during these restarts. After pressing ESC from the RAID status
check the system booted to Windows.

Not a great way to start the day. Why would the system freeze hard like
this? There's no backup log so not sure what haapened with the drive. I've
been using the drives for several weeks now with no problems.

Any thoughts??
