Hello all,
As best I know, the server is up to date on firmware. (It's only about a
month old) I'm not going back out to the site. The admin has decided to
leave it at a 1 nic installation without ISA. (Until I can talk him into
fixing everything) He will update the bios if needed and let me know
tomorrow.
I have googled from every angle I can think of on this, as well as searched
the dell forums. There's a lot of chatter about broadcom nics and ISA, but
not much in the way of definative answers.
Who has seen the problem where you cannot set static ip addresses on the
nics? Every time they would revert to DHCP. This was going on well after
RSS and checksum offloading was disabled. Even though the server is stable
now, the one NIC in there is running DHCP.
Thanks,
Buddy G ~

Good thought, as over the past year since the 29xx came out, there have
been number of critical updates available on the Dell website - some
fairly recent.

Any bios updates flashes etc. that need to be done?

OK Major bad evil bad evil evil happening. Forget what I said earlier
about everything being OK. The broadcoms would not cooperate and kept
reverting to DHCP enabled, thus loosing their IP. They also reaked havoc
with the DHCP server. It kept loosing the proper binding and even
shutting down. This was especially bad once ISA 2004 was installed. We
could not get the CEICW to run clean.
At one point, we removed the Broadcom NICS and installed two Realtek
Gbit adapters. This hosed everything of course, but even after getting
this straightened out, the IP addresses with the Realtek NICS were also
reverting to DHCP.
For the time being, we had to uninstall ISA, unistall the Realtek NICS,
re enable only one Broadcom and reconfigure the server for single nic
operation. The NIC is still reverting to DHCP,so we gave it a
reservation in DHCP to ensure it keeps it's address.

I was just wondering if anyone else has seen the "Applying ComputerBuddy

We are in the middle of a similar swing on a Dell 2900 at a client
site and got locked in "Applying Computer Settings" limbo also. Our
problem was not with the Broadcom, which appears to work fine so far,
but with the Intel Pro GB dual port. Without going into the gory
details, I had to uninstall all the Intel Pro drivers (using the
utilities that Dell provided), reboot and rediscover the NIC. The
startup delays went away...but I have not yet gone back there to
re-install ISA, so this is just a 'so-far-so-good.'
I will tell you this: I was on the phone with Dell for 2 hours
(because initially I thought it was a hardware problem -- given the
card appeared to work and then stopped). After ruling out HW, the 1st
tech escalated me to what they called an advanced software specialist.
But this guy had never worked with ISA. They were friendly enough,
but if you call after having already done all the standard
troubleshooting that they have on their scripts, they are not very
helpful.
I think Susan Bradley's comments about the Broadcom are interesting
though. (That's me getting nervous again...)
Will know on Monday if this was just a case of broken driver
installation or if there is another issue.
Joe
