yes, it is normal for the list of root servers to be populated. However, as
you have specified forwarders (normaly during the CEICW) you will be using
these rather than the root hints.

Changing to use root hints is quite simple, just remove the forwarders, OK
out, restart the DNS Server service. You can put the forwarders back either
manually or by running CEICW if we see no improvement.

Marina may be more corrrect, just dodgy servers at Planet.

I tried your suggestions,
Here are the results:

It _could_ be our old friend EDNS. planet.nl has many entries in the
zone.
Also, depending on who I query (ns08.wxs.nl, or friends) there is quite a
delay doing so. Curiously, queries for mailrelay.planet.nl take a lot
less
time, not sure why.

I'd try:
dnscmd /Config /EnableEDnsProbes 0
from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/828731/en-us and setting the
smarthost
value back to the name.

Not making any guarantees on this one, but it's worth a shot.

OK, it didn´t solve it.
The extra registry-entry appeared, but still Exchange cannot send email
via
the smart host if I specify its DNS-name.
(while it works OK if I specify the IP-address)

I'd be interested to know if you're using 'root hints', one or more of
the
NSx.wxs.nl, or possibly other DNS servers, as 'forwarders'. It's only a
side
interest though.

I have ns1.wxs.nl and ns2.wxs.nl as forwarders.
There´s a list of root hints but I did not touch it, it was installed by
the
SBS2003 installer and mentions only the real top-level a,b,c,d,e,... "NET"
servers.

Any further suggestions appreciated!

OK, but their mailserver responds in the right way when I contact it
using
its IP-address.
It only goes wrong when I try to contact it using the DNS-name of the
server. So the trouble must have something to do with the DNS-lookup?

Possibly Planet does not have its DNS in order?
Still, if I look it up manually (using ping by name) I get the right IP
of
their mailserver.
It keeps stumping me. I will contact them though.

Hi Wolter,

Don't assume Exchange is wrong. I would contact planet for this. They
are
known for having problems with their mailservers often. One of the
reasons I
hate clients who have planet as their ISP.
