When I run CEICW now when I set it to use PPPoE (instead of the other
options) the setup shows an error during the Network setup portion of the
wizard. I click "Cancel" and it continues to set up the other elements
(Firewall [not ISA, yet], Exchange/Email, etc). It did not do that when I
let the modem itself establish the internet connection using PPPoE, but then
the static IP address only applies to my router and not my SBS 2k3 computer
unless I open up the proper ports and have t hem forwarded to my SBS 2k3 box
or set it up to do an "IP Passthrough". The modem is a router and a
firewall. I guess I'm curious as to why I would need yet another router in
the mix before it would actually reach my SBS 2k3 computer. The other router
I have was the firewall router for my entire network (before I decided to use
SBS 2k3). So, basically you'd have my static IP 67.x.x.x at the external end
of the modem router and 192.168.1.x at the other end and then 192.168.1.x
(whatever DHCP assigns) on the external end of the second router and then it
would use 192.168.x.x at it's internal address and the SBS 2k3 NIC would get
it's address from that router (assuming again it's using DHCP) and then I'd
have yet another subnet on the other NIC that would be the gateway, DNS,
firewall, DHCP, DNS server for all of my internal client components. I'd
have to open up (or disable) 2 of the three firewalls just so that the
network was manageable.
I'm assuming the PPPoE using the wizard setup doesn't work as has been
mentioned. Is there a log for the CEICW setup that I can peruse just to
verify that it really is the PPPoE connection that is causing the problem.
Somehow it is working or I wouldn't be able to type to you now. But, there's
something obviously wrong. Now, before I got SBS 2k3 SP1 Premium, I was
running a 1U Dell server and connected it to my old DSL modem and it seemed
to work fine. Is it an SP1 or R2 issue that is causing the PPPoE connection
problems?

don't use the "Windows Firewall-ICS" service and it should be disabled. I
also always put my ISP supplied DSL modem in bridge mode so I don't have to
deal with any idiosyncrasies there. I don't have any clients that use PPPOE
but earlier when I had to temporarily use that before getting a static IP it
was necessary to put a low end router in between the DSL modem and the SBS
to do the PPPOE connection otherwise it could be flaky-that's why you see
Cris' recommendation and from many others to have that router for PPPOE
present. I have no problem with ISA 2004 at any of my clients and prefer
that over the RRAS firewall.
