You keep saying hub..
I DO hope it is actually a switch.
Also please check the lights on the unit.
Are ALL the connections running at 100mb/s duplex?
That will be a limiting factor on the more entry-level units..

I'm trying an experiment tonight. I've moved the NAS so that it is
attached directly to the first hub in the chain (SBS > hub > NAS) and will
see what happens. Wish me luck.

OH HECK, what was that 5,4,3 rule of ethernet?
Oops.. yes max of 3 bridges (switches) with max of 2 repeaters (hubs)
between.
and even then it's not guaranteed to work.
It's all about the delays introduced within each broadcast domain.
excessive collisions or a 10MB client in the middle domain will kill the
lot.
Realy 2 switches max for and desired route is what to aim for. with good
switches you can stretch this to 3 or even 4
get some second hand HP 2424M (J4093A) switches off ebay.. they seem to
be arround 60$
Hang the wireless units off these, where needed.
the HP units can be trunked..
UP to 4 (or is it 8) 100MB ports can be bundled together to give you up
to 800MB/S (yes 4 ports) 400 one way 400 back = 800
real-world stats should give you about 300mb/s end-to-end throughput even
through 3 units..
