Re: DHCP & Sharepoint Issue - Server Error in '/'

Addition:

One thing that is interesting is on a workstation that is having the
problem, if I assign it a static IP address it instantly fixes the issue for
a period of time and sharepoint works. The error does return on that machine
though as I assigned myself a static IP yesterday and when I logged in this
morning, I had the error.

Ok, old machine has now been off since yesterday. After flushing the cache
on the workstation, the problem still exists.

The IP address in IIS is set to the IP address of the server 192.168.1.200,
TCP port 80 and SSL 444. Nothing has been changed in these settings since
the new server went live a few months ago and I've had no problems with
sharepoint until now.

In advanced, I have

192.168.1.200 80 companyweb
192.168.1.200 80 companyweb.mycompany.local

and I have now just added

127.0.0.1 80 companyweb.mycompany.local

I flush the DNS again and clear my browser cache and still the problem
occurs. Again on the workstation next to it, sharepoint is working fine.

Any further ideas?

With the old machine off, clear the DNS cache on the workstations (ipconfig
/flushdns). I assume the DNS and the DHCP is on the new server now. If
companyweb, the top-level site, doesn't work, I have my doubts the sub-sites
will work. In IIS Manager, make sure that the IP address of companyweb is
se to the IP address of the server and not to (All Unassigned). Click the
'Advanced' button and make sure you have two entries, one with the IP of the
server and host header companyweb, and one with the localhost IP ,
127.0.0.1, and host header companyweb.domain.local

My suspicion is that it's a DNS issue.

I have shut downt the old server completely to at least rule it out. The
problem occurs even when this machine is off.

The home directory is c:\inetpub\companyweb

By going to http://companyweb the user experiencing the problem is taken
to
the SBS welcome screen that provides the menu options:

My Company's Internal Web Site
Network Configuration Wizard
Remote Web Workplace
Information and Answers

The office is closing now so I will pick this up again first thing in the
morning and report it here.

Thanks for your help so far.

If there are workstations that can access companyweb without issues and
others that can't, the problem can't be on the SharePoint site. There
must
be some kind of name resolution problem The whole setup with the two
domains
in one network could very possibly be the issue.

About the 'Home Directory' tab, go to IIS Manager, companyweb properties
and
please post the path under the 'Home Directory' tab as it is. I read
about
an issue that creates the problem you have when a '\' is appended to the
path. If your users go to http://companyweb and not to the sub-site do
they
still get the error? Is the companyweb site on the old domain controller
shut down?

No no software however I did do a little work on our Trend Micro
Antivirus
software, mainly deleting contents of a folder within that program
file.
In
order to rule this out, I disabled the software and stopped all trend
micro
services but the problem still persisted.

By home directory tab do you mean from sharepoint? If so, that's

http://companyweb/sites/companysp/default.aspx

One thing I have discovered. On a client that is getting the error
message
when visiting that address, if I change their IP address it seems to
fix
the
problem until it happens again some time later.

Totally stumped.

Did you install any kind of software on the server recently (before
this
error just started happening)? Maybe a reinstall of some component or
application? Also what is the path under the 'Home Directory' tab?

I did this yesterday but sadly it didnt resolve the issue. I'm using
1.1.4322. I Switched it to 2.0.50727 to see if that worked then
reverted
it
back to 1.1

"Costas" wrote:

This error is usually due to the incompatibility of the .net
component
on
IIS. Start by checking the the ASP.net version of the 'companyweb'
site.
It should be set to 1.1. If it's not, set it to that version and
issue
an
'iisreset' on the command line

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

I have 2 domains, domain A and domain B. Domain A has our SBS
server
and
all
users whilst domain B (our old redundant domain) has our old
server.
I
decided to keep our old server running from a DR perspective and
since
it
was
servicing all the clients with DHCP I never got round to setting
it
up
on
the
new server mainly becuase it's been running like that, problem
free
for
over
two months.

If I cant resolve the issue I will set up DHCP on the new server
but
I
still
need to get to the bottom of why this has happened.

"Costas" wrote:

I don't think this is a SharePoint issue. I read your post a
couple
of
times just to understand the part about:

"....our DHCP server which sits on another SBS on a different
domain.. "

How many SBS servers do you have on the network? SBS should be
the
only
domain controller and should have DHCP running on it.

Hi

Everything was running smoothly when suddenly people started
getting
the
following error message when using sharepoint:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Server Error in '/' Application.

The resource cannot be found.
Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or
one
of
its
dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed,
or
is
temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and
make
sure
that
it is spelled correctly.

Requested Url: /sites/mysite/default.aspx
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now when client (A) cant access sharepoint and gets that
message,
other
clients can still access it. Later in the day the problem will
vanish
for
Client (A). Also logging out then in again solves the problem.
It's
happening randomly on all clients.

The other issue which happened at the same time, is suddenly
our
DHCP
server
which sits on another SBS on a different domain isnt reachable
and
an
ipconfig /renew returns the error:

"An error occurred while renewing interface Wired Connection:
Unable
to
contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out."

This has been working fine for months but now I'm having to
manually
set
static IPS until I resolve the issue.

Oh, I can ping the DHCP server and have full access to it no
probs.

Now I've tried to re-trace my steps to see if I changed
something
on
the
LAN
and the only thing I changed was the default group policy:
Computer
Configuration/Admin Templates/Network/DNS Client and I changed
the
DNS
Server
to 'enabled' and then added the IP address of our main SBS
which
is
our
DNS
server. When the errors I have described started happening, I
switched
it
back to not configured.

Network Topology: Simple topology. All nodes (including the
servers)
connect directly to a switch. Our router connects to the
switch
also
handeling external trafic so this shouldnt be a factor.

Any help on this one would be great. Thanks.
