Hello Rajiv,
Thank you for posting here and also thanks to Costas for the input.
From your post, I understand that some XP clients cannot open fax console.
I suggest you try following steps and check if it works:
Suggestion 1: Prepare a Clean Boot environment on the problematic client
workstations
=====================================================
1. Click Start and Click Run, and in the "Open" line, type in "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks) and click OK.
2. Under the Service tab, check "Hide All Microsoft Services", and then
click "Disable All" button. In this way, we can disable all the services
which belong to third-party programs.
3. Under the Startup tab, click "Disable All" button.
4. Click OK.
5. Choose Yes to restart the computer.
6. Check "Don't show this message or launch the system configuration
utility when Windows starts".
7. Please check if the issue persists.
If the issue persists, please try rest steps in the clean boot environment.
NOTE: We can check on Normal Startup in the General tab to roll back to
Normal Mode after we get this issue resolved.
Suggestion 2: Reinstall Fax service on the client:
===========================
1. Please remove the network Fax on the client via Control Panel ->
Printers and Faxes.
2. Please remove the Fax Service on the client:
Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs -> Add/Remove Windows Components,
uncheck Fax Services and click Next and then follow the wizard to finish.
3. Run following command:
sysocmgr.exe /u:"\\YourServerName\clientapps\faxxp\fax_inst.inf" /r /q /n
/i:"\\YourServerName\clientapps\faxxp\fax_master.inf"
4. After that, go to Control Panel -> Printers and Faxes, double-click Add
Printer. Select "A network printer, or a printer attached to another
computer", click Next, select "Connect to this printer (or to browse for a
printer, select this option and click Next). Type "\\sbsserver\Fax" in the
Name textbox and click Next. Follow the wizard to finish.
Then please check if Fax console can be opened.
Suggestion 3:
=========
1. Remove the client workstation via Server Management.
2. On the client workstation, leave the domain.
3. Re-add the client workstation via Server Management. Ensure to install
shared fax client.
4. On the client workstation, visit http://servername/connectcomputer to
re-join the domain.
I hope the above information is helpful to you. However, if the issue
persists, please help me gather following information:
1. Does the issue happen for the problematic client workstations no matter
which user logs on? Please try different user accounts and check if it
makes any difference.
2. Please download the MPS Report tool from the following link and run it
on the client and the SBS server, then send the generated CAB file to my
mailbox v-mzhuan@xxxxxxxxxxxxx for further investigation so that we can
find what the root cause is:

Please try the above steps at your earliest convenience. If you have any
concern, please feel free to let me know.
Best regards,
Manfred Zhuang(MSFT)
