SBS2003 + tombstoned WIN2K DC

Hi,
Got a customer with an SBS2003 server and also a Windows 2000 server
which had been setup as a DC.
One day they call us and say they can't create new users on the
SBS2003.
I've had a look and it seems that the Win2K DC has been tombstoned.
But....
The PC's on the domain still appear to be using the Win2K DC as their
logon server and if you unplug the tombstoned Win2K DC then nothing
works on the network.
However if you change a users password on the SBS2003 then log off and
logon then this works OK.
Normally I'd demote the Win2K DC and go through on the SBS2003 using
the various tools to correct teh AD records etc etc.
but I'm a bit worried that the PC's still seem to be talking to the
tombstoned Win2K DC.
Any ideas ?
If I ping domain.local I get a response from the IP of the tombstoned
DC not the SBS2003.
Jim.
.
