RE: Firewall Recommendation (continued)

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi Scott,

I have to agree with Leythos - invest as much as you can in security
hardware. Spending $2000 now means you don't have to spend $x,000 later when
things go wrong and your network needs rebuilding, data is lost etc. I've
only just started playing with the Watchguard appliances but to say I'm
impressed is an understatement. With the X550e I now have a 2 factor
authentication system on top of the fact my client's spam has decreased by
over 95% - they're over the moon with this alone, let alone the fact that
they've got an additional Anti Malware layer and a best in class Firewall
that is fairly straight forward to manage. If you can't stretch to the X550e
or above, then like Leythos has pointed out, try the Edge series.
An alternative (although I've never used them but intend to) is the Juniper
range - their UTM bundles look pretty good, using BrightMail and Kaspersky
components.
HTH.

Regards Colin.

This is where I get confused.
I'm anticipating around $600 for the box. Subscription fees would be in
addition. You're saying this $$ won't provide a trustworthy UTM solution. The
ads for these and similar products say they are solutions for small
businesses.
I trust this board over sales ads and product brochures. What should we do?

A typical solution is something like this:

WatchGuard X550e Firewall + Live Security (firmware/support 1 year)
$1400 retail

UTM Bundle (see description) $585/year Retail

....

You could also go with a X55e + 1 Year LSS + UTM: $990 retail

This is an area that I never scrimp on, I buy good firewall hardware -
it's what makes you barrier layer safe.

"The Firebox® X550e UTM Software Suite offers comprehensive Unified
Threat Management (UTM) for your X550e appliance. It combines best-in-
class security services including the powerful content filtering of
WebBlocker, the unique, real-time anti-spam protection of spamBlocker
and the robust, signature-based protection against viruses, spyware,
worms, trojans and other network threats of Gateway AV/IPS, with the
expert guidance, support and coverage delivered by WatchGuard?s
LiveSecurity service. All the security solutions you need for your
business - bundled into a single full year subscription for a great
value and integrated into your X550e appliance for streamlined setup and
maintenance."
