Ok, great. I've increased the store to 25GB and it's working
perfectly. Thanks so much!

Hi,

If Exchange works fine and the store has no problem, we can just leave it

When the size of the store reaches the limit in the future, you can do
offline defragment.

Thanks very much for the reply. I took the first poster's advice and
just updated the server to Exchange SP2 without defragmenting the mail
store. Should I go ahead and defragment the mail store anyway?

Hi,

I agree with Steve, and I suggest you to do an Offline Defragment to
solve
the 16 GB issue first. Then you can upgrade Exchange to SP2.

On an Exchange 2003 Standard server (Pre-SP2), only one mailbox store
and
one public folder store can be created and 16 GB limit is set to each.
Also, the 16-GB size limit for the Exchange private mailbox store
database
is the sum of the size of both the mailbox store .edb and .stm files
(by
default, they are Priv1.edb and Priv1.stm) and the 16-GB size limit
for
the
Exchange public folder store is the sum of the size of both the public
folder store .edb and .stm files (by default, they are Pub1.edb and
Pub1.stm).

Actually, online defrag only mark the deleted pages instead of
deleting
them physically, so it will not reduce the file size of the Exchange
databases. For more information about online maintenance, please
refer to
the following article.

XADM: Understanding Performance and Scalability Characteristics of
Exchange
2000 MDB Online

Maintenancehttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;271222

To actually reduce the file size of the Exchange databases, please use
ESEUTIL utility to perform offline defragment. For detailed
information,
please take a look at the following article.

Databaseshttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;328804

Exchange Server Mailbox Store Does Not Mount When the Mailbox Store
Database Reaches the 16-GB

Limithttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;828070

On SBS, you can configure SBS Backup to automatically backup Exchange
data.
In donig so, it will automatically delete all transaction logs.

Please refer to:

Backuphttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;243380

Hello; I have a company with an SBS2003 server. We recently
upgraded
the server to SP2 and found that we were running out of mail
space
(Exchange shut down telling us we were over the 16GB limit.) I
ran
the
registry entry as per:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912375

(How to increase the Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2
18-gigabyte
database size limit)

And restarted the exchange services. Nothing. Still getting the
error
message in the event log. Restarted the server. Nothing.
Dismounted
the mail store and re-mounted it. Nothing. Re-entered the
registry
keys and restarted again. Nothing. Do I need to do anything
special
to
get it to "take"? I ended up inserting the registry key
recommended
pre-SP2, which increases the mail store by a gig so you can
delete
messages. That did the trick, but we're still going to run into
problems down the line.

Thanks for your help.
