Thanks very much for the reply. I took the first poster's advice and
just updated the server to Exchange SP2 without defragmenting the mail
store. Should I go ahead and defragment the mail store anyway?

the 16 GB issue first. Then you can upgrade Exchange to SP2.
On an Exchange 2003 Standard server (Pre-SP2), only one mailbox store

Also, the 16-GB size limit for the Exchange private mailbox store
