Re: HELP! Restoring SBS without a System State backup

Hello Mark,

Thank you for posting here.

From your post, I understand that the server crashed. You only backed up
the file system, but not the system state. Now you reinstalled SBS and
would like to restore the data.

Firstly I would like to explain that we cannot restore the server from the
file system backup. Even we have the file system backup, we cannot get back
the AD information back.

However, we can reinstall the SBS server, install the service packs to let
the service pack level be same with the original server. Then manually
recreate the user accounts and user groups.

After that, we can restore the documents and data file (such as Exchange
database and SharePoint database).

For the issues related to disaster recovery, the troubleshooting can be
complicated and time-consuming. However, due to the limit of Newsgroup

| Anyone?
|
| I'm thinking that I could run:
|
| setup /forestprep
| setup /domainprep (these two would get back the AD schema
| setup /disasterrecovery (to get the registry entries back)
|
| Could I then move the resulting logs and DBs (from mdbdata, right?) to
| another location and copy back in my good logs and DB's from the previous
| installation, then mount the stores?
|
| Would this work?
